CHED to issue new standards for HEIs

The Commission on Higher Education will come up with a new set of standards for higher education institutions (HEIs).

In an interview, acting CHED chairman Romulo  Neri, said that a technical committee is already working on the standards that HEIs must meet.

If HEIs fail to meet with the new CHED standards, the courses  they offer  will be discontinued, he added.

Neri said CHED is pursuing the move in the wake of an observation by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities (PACU) that performance in licensure examinations given by the Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC) to graduates of a college or university is used as the sole basis for the closure of certain courses.

Lawyer Gonzalo Duque, PACU president, earlier said that the CHED policy was unfair, especially for HEIs in the provinces where many of high school graduates from public schools are not given adequate preparation for college studies.

Dr. William Medrano, CHED executive director, said that the new standards would include the quality of the HEIs’ faculty, research output and accreditation with reputable accrediting agencies. – Rainier Allan Ronda
