ZAMBOANGA CITY – A man was killed when a grenade he was playing with accidentally exploded in a barangay in Jolo, capital town of Sulu Sunday night.

The fatality, a mechanic, remained unidentified. The explosion also wounded a Marine and a woman.

The wounded, also unidentified, were taken to Sulu Integrated Provincial Hospital for treatment.

Maj. Gen. Ruben Rafael, Joint Task Force Comet chief, said the victim was reportedly toying with a grenade when it exploded at  about 8:30 p.m. Saturday at his shop in Upper San Raymundo street, Jolo.

“The mechanic technician was playing with the old grenade when it accidentally exploded,” he said.

The Marine and the woman, who were in the shop, sustained shrapnel wounds. Rafael said the two wounded are now in stable condition at the provincial hospital.

The explosion was not strong enough to be heard in the neighborhood, he added.  – Roel Pareño
