Young Filipino math and science prodigies won six bronze medals in the 4th International Math and Science Olympiad in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Ma. Czarina Angela Lao, a grade 4 student at St. Jude Catholic School-Manila; Michael Brodeth, grade 6 student at Colegio de San Agustin-Makati; Mario Ongkiko, grade 5 student at Xavier School; and Andrew Caguntas, grade 6 student at Bangkal Elementary School, all won a bronze medal in the Math division of the Olympiad held from Nov. 10 to 16.
Angelique Joy Virata, grade 6 student at the Pagadian City Pilot School and Frances Reyes, grade 5 student at St. Paul College-Pasig, both won bronze medals in the Science division.
The Filipino “whiz kids” competed against students from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and host country Indonesia.
The Philippine delegation to the Math and Science Olympiad was composed of three public school students and eight private school students for the Math division; and three public schools students and four private school students for the Science division. The Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines provided support to the group.
The delegates were accompanied by 20 Department of Education officials and teachers.
