Saguisag, driver may be moved out of ICU next week

With his condition steadily improving, former senator Rene Saguisag may be moved out of the intensive care unit to a regular room next week or barely two weeks after being seriously injured in a vehicular accident that killed his wife and wounded his driver and another passenger in Makati City.

Dr. Eric Nubla, Makati Medical Center spokesperson, also reported an improvement in the condition of Saguisag’s driver Philip Calvario, who may also be transferred to a regular room. But Nubla did not say when exactly next week the two may be transferred from the intensive care unit.

“Once Atty. Saguisag is transferred to a regular room, we would concentrate on treating and checking the condition of his fractured ribs and contusions until these are completely healed,” Nubla said.

“Right now, a chest tube to drain fluids is still being used on him,” he explained.

As for Calvario, Nubla said the driver’s neurological status has improved and that he is now able to open his eyes.

A speeding dump truck that was trying to beat the red light rammed the Toyota Hi-Ace Grandia van carrying the Saguisag couple and dance instructor Rhea Imelda Obong after midnight on Nov. 8 at the intersection of Arnaiz Street and Osmeña Highway. Saguisag’s wife, Dulce died on arrival at the Ospital ng Makati. Obong was treated only for minor injuries.

Dulce a former secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, was buried at the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City on Friday. Doctors did not allow the former senator to attend his wife’s burial because of his weak condition. – Rhodina Villanueva
