The Catholic Church and other religious groups have endorsed the call of Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. for a “moral revolution” in government to cleanse the bureaucracy and elevate the country to second- or first-world status.
De Venecia said among those who are supporting his crusade are Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, Mike Velarde of the 10-million-strong El Shaddai, Eddie Villanueva of the Jesus is Lord movement, and Bishops Benny and Reuben Abante as well as 26 other Baptist bishops and pastors.

De Venecia said the fight to eradicate corruption in the bureaucracy will bolster the government’s anti-poverty program by giving it more resources for meaningful and significant projects to lift the quality of life of millions of Filipinos.
Every aspect of government and national society needs cleansing – in the executive and legislative departments and judiciary, the local government units and the electorate, and the business sector, he added.
De Venecia said the country needs to “turn a new leaf, because this is the final hope for our country, our people and our children.”
The fundamental basis for this revolution is to “admit that we are all sinners – that the first test of wisdom is to tell the truth,” he added.
De Venecia said he had told President Arroyo in a letter more than a week ago that “she’ll move farther and achieve the goals of the revolution sooner.”
“She is determined to leave her mark in history,” he said. “The success of the moral revolution will ensure that she’ll be a successful president.”
He proposed to Mrs. Arroyo the creation of a high-level council on moral reform and national renewal to combat corruption in office, De Venecia said. — Delon Porcalla
