DOTC chief mulls libel raps against JDV III

-

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya – Transportation Secretary Leandro Mendoza is set to file a criminal complaint against the son of  Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. for linking him to an alleged assassination plot against him and his father.

“Secretary Mendoza has said that he was not a criminal to have thought of masterminding the killing of Mr. Joey de Venecia III,” Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chairman Thompson Lantion said yesterday.

“It is not in the Secretary’s character and others can vouch for this. After some thought, Secretary Mendoza finally decided to bring De Venecia III to a proper forum and make him answerable for the baseless and unfounded allegations.”

Lantion, along with other local leaders and members of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) have resigned from the party to protest De Venecia’s “posturing.”

“How can he (Speaker) call for reforms in the government when he cannot even morally reform himself?” he said.

“Is he sour-graping because his son lost in the NBN deal? His recent statements only tend to undermine his relationship with the Palace and his partymates, especially in the grassroots level who have been affected by his posturing.”

Lantion is set to join the Nationalist People’s Coalition of former ambassador Eduardo Cojuangco, which is part of the pro-administration coalition.

Assistant Secretary Reynaldo Berroya, Land Transportation Office chief whom De Venecia III also implicated in the supposed plot, said the Speaker’s son was “hallucinating.”

Retired Army chief Jaime de los Santos also denied as “false imputations” the statement of De Venecia III that he is the source of the information that Mendoza and Berroya have targeted him and his father for assassination.

“I know my classmates Secretary Mendoza and Berroya,” he said.

“They are professional, patriotic and nationalistic fellowmen and competent leaders. Mendoza, Berroya and myself all belong to ‘A’ Company. We were roommates and we were more than brothers when we were cadets. "  — Charlie Lagasca
