No Pinoy in latest Nigeria kidnapping

- Pia Lee-Brago -

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) yesterday said that no Filipino was involved in the latest kidnapping of foreign workers in Nigeria.

DFA spokesman Claro Cristobal said Philippine Ambassador Masaranga Umpa has informed the DFA that there is no Filipino among the three foreign workers abducted with four Nigerians from the Royal Dutch Shell complex in Niger Delta.

The kidnapped foreign workers were a Croatian, Russian and another unidentified non-Filipino national, according to the DFA.

Filipino electrical supervisor Albert Bacani Sr., who was abducted by armed men in Nigeria, was released last Sept. 27 after two weeks in captivity.

Despite his abduction, Bacani appealed to the Philippine government to lift the partial ban on the deployment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to Nigeria, saying the country is a good labor market for OFWs as foreign companies offer good compensation.

He added that the group that kidnapped him is not an organized one that could be responsible for other abductions of foreign workers in Nigeria.
