DFA confirms Pinay’s death

- Michael Punongbayan -

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) yesterday confirmed the murder of a 27-year-old Filipina maid in Toronto, Canada last Oct. 1.

Officials identified the overseas Filipino worker (OFW) as Jocelyn Dulnuan, who was found dead at the basement of a huge mansion in Mississauga.

DFA spokesperson Claro Cristobal said Alejandro Mosquera, the Philippine consul general in Toronto, confirmed the incident.

Online news reports from Canada said police have not arrested any suspect and are not revealing much about the alleged murder.

Cristobal said DFA Secretary Alberto Romulo has instructed Mosquera to work with local authorities and exert efforts to bring those responsible for the killing to justice.

The DFA also ordered the consul general to provide all necessary assistance needed and help facilitate the repatriation of the victim’s remains to the Philippines.

Dulnuan reportedly went to Canada sometime last year and had been working as a maid in the Greater Toronto area for over a year now.

The Toronto Star, through an article posted at thestar.com, said the Filipina maid had been working for the Chanchlani family for the past two months.

Dulnuan was reportedly found dead by one of her employers at around 5 p.m. and immediately called the police to report the death.

Peel Regional Police investigators said they have spoken with the victim’s mother who is in Hong Kong, to inform her of what happened.

Dulnuan, believed to be a native of Hingyon, Ifugao, also worked in Hong Kong before going to Canada in search of greener pastures.

Another website, threat-assessment.blogspot.com, described Dulnuan as an educated woman who took a job “that fell far short of her aspirations and abilities.”
