Compared to other Asian countries, Filipinos rank first in the number of fugitives deported from the United States for various offenses.
In a report by Manila Mail, a Filipino American fortnightly newspaper based in Washington DC published by Maya Media Inc., 112 Filipinos have been expelled from the US for various deportable offenses since October 2006.
The report quoted Brian DeMore, deputy director for the Office of Detention and Removal Operations (DRO) of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement of Los Angeles (ICE).
Based on records from Oct. 1 last year to July 25, 2007, the Philippines had the most number of deported fugitives, followed by China and India with 46 and 41, respectively.
Korea ranked fourth with 29, Laos with 11, and Cambodia with only three deported fugitives for the past 10 months.
The report also noted that insofar as other countries outside Asia are concerned, Mexico has the most number of deported fugitives with 8,495, followed by El Salvador with 1,043. – Michael Punongbayan
