The British Embassy in Manila advised visa applicants to the United Kingdom of two major changes in the application process that will be implemented starting May 31.

The British government is introducing biometric data collection (fingerscans and digital photographs) as part of a worldwide biometric identification process designed to protect an individual’s identity, facilitate future entry to the UK, combat visa fraud and abuse of UK’s immigration and asylum systems.

“The application cannot be processed if an applicant refuses, or cannot provide acceptable biometric data,” the embassy said.

Fingerscans will be collected from each applicant using an electronic scanner. No ink, liquid or chemical will be used. A digital photograph will be taken and the whole procedure should take no more than five minutes to complete.

The embassy advised applicants to ensure that their fingertips are free from any form of decoration, abrasions or other markings. Any facial cuts or bruises should have healed or disappeared prior to providing biometric data.

Digital photographs cannot be taken when applicants wear head coverings that hide the face, dark glasses, and face or neck coverings.

Visa applications will now be filed through the British Embassy’s commercial partner, VFS Global Ltd., at the new UK Visa Application Center (UKVAC) at the Phil. AXA Building in Makati City.

Applicants will also be able to obtain here general immigration information without additional cost other than the visa fee.

As part of preparations for biometric data collection, UK visa applications will not be accepted from May 25-30.

Meanwhile, the Philippines has opened a resident embassy in Oslo, Norway, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs .

It will temporarily hold office at Suite 1011 of the Radisson SAS Scandinavia Hotel in Oslo. Second Secretary and Consul Porfirio Mayo will be the embassy’s Charge d’Affaires, ad interim, pending the arrival this month of Ambassador Victoria Bataclan, who was the country’s ambassador to Sweden.
