Filipino students win international math competition

So who says Filipino students are poor in math?

Not this group of brilliant students who recently shone in an international math competition.

A 16-member Philippine delegation of young Filipino math wizards won in the 10th Po Leung Kuk Primary World Olympiad held in Hong Kong from July 17 to 21.

The students were greeted with warm cheers and applause from Pinoys at the NAIA airport Terminal yesterday afternoon. Filipinos had reason to celebrate and be proud with the victory of the Filipino math wizards.

They and their trainors from the Mathematics Trainers Guild came home aboard Philippine Airlines flight PR 301 from Hong Kong at around 12:45 p.m. yesterday.

Carmela Lao and Vance Go, both Grade 6 students from St. Jude Catholic School in San Miguel, Manila won silver medals.

Team members Aldric Reyes of Chiang Kai Shek, Arvin Alba of San Beda, Immanuel Encarnacion and Elvis Ayroso of Philippine Science High School, Zheng Rong Wu of Zamboanga Chung Hua High School and Marc Terence Co of Xavier School won bronze medals.

Other members of the team who competed in the tournament were Paula Micah Chua of Du Hwa Luong Academy, Ma. Socorro Medina and Fred Neil Tupaz of Philippine Science High School, Darwin Ivan

Carrasco from Pamplona Elementary School, Michael Ongkauko, Brendon Go and Ryan Co from Xavier School and Arielle Chua from St. Jude.

The Mathematics Trainors Group said members of the team spent three months in intensive training. This year’s wizards performed better than last year’s batch, according to their trainors.
