July 5, 2005 | 12:00am
The United States hailed yesterday its strong ties with the Philippines as it expressed hope that despite the "ups and downs" of bilateral relations, "we find ourselves stronger allies."
The celebration was marked by the unprecedented attendance of President Arroyo, who gave no speech. It was the first time since she took office in 2001 that the US-educated Mrs. Arroyo attended the Fourth of July celebration at the embassy, which was capped by a rousing fireworks display over Manila Bay behind the embassy grounds.
In a speech in festive rites marking US independence at the Charles Parsons Ballroom, US Embassy Chargé dAffaires Joseph Mussomeli pointed out that "sometimes in conflict, sometimes in anger, but most times with understanding and mutual admiration, we have grown together."
"I hope that after my departure or maybe because of it the relationship between our two countries will continue to deepen," he added.
Mussomeli also weighed in for the democratic process as the Philippines tries to surmount another political crisis.
"Sometimes we as a people decide, through the democratic process, to fix what is wrong with the country. Other times we discern that what is best for our country is to accept imperfection and mistakes as inevtiable and tolerable," he stressed.
He said that the strengthening of democratic instituions is paramount, becaude "(these) are are only true safeguard against both tyranniny and anarchy."
Also present in the jampacked affair was Vice President Noli de Castro and stalwarts of the business sector and the diplomatic corps. Fernando Poe Jr.s widow Susan Roces, who had eaflier confirmed her attendance to the celebration, was represented by her daughter Mary Grace Llamanzares.
"As Americans in the Philippines, we can celebrate in a country that also cherishes the democratic values upon which our nation was founded," Mussomelii added.
Afestive air hung over the celerbations complete with hotdogs, burgers and crabcakes as Americans and Filipinos alike watched in awe as fireworks rained on the bay.
"After all, it is also Filipino-American friendship day," quipped one happy Filipino guest.
