26 LGUs cited for efforts in drive vs malnutrition

President Arroyo presented yesterday achievement awards to 26 local government units and three barangay scholars for their outstanding contribution to the battle against malnutrition and poverty.

Given the 2004 Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (Crown) award were Pulilan (Bulacan) and Bulacan province for Central Luzon; Cabuyao (Laguna) for Calabarzon; San Juan for the National Capital Region (NCR); Sorsogon City for the Bicol Region; Calatrava (Negros Occidental) for Western Visayas; Inabanga (Bohol) for Central Visayas; Panabo City for the Davao Region; Banga (South Cotabato), Kidapawan City and South Cotabato province for Socsargen.

The awarding ceremony, held at Malacañang, highlighted the achievements this year of the government’s campaign against poverty and malnutrition.

The Crown awardees received trophies and cash.

Mrs. Arroyo was assisted by Agriculture Secretary Arturo Yap, board chairman of the National Nutrition Council (NCC), in awarding the Crown maintenance award to Pozzorubio (Pangasinan) for the Ilocos Region; Tuguegerao City and Nueva Vizcaya province for Cagayan Valley; Manila for NCR; Tacloban City and Hindang (Leyte) for Eastern Visayas; Malaybalay City, Quezon (Bukidnon) and Bukidnon province for Northern Mindanao; Davao del Norte for the Davao Region; and Agusan del Sur for Caraga.

The winners of the Crown maintenance award received a Crown maintenance certificate.

The winners of the Nutrition Honor Award were Dupax (Nueva Vizcaya) for Cagayan Valley; Tagaytay City for Calabarzon; Kalibo for Western Visayas; and Talibon for Central Visayas.

Winning first place in the contest for Outstanding Barangay Nutrition scholar was Metchel Malapad of Barangay Kalasungay, Malaybalay City.

Malapad bested 22,000 other Barangay Nutrition Scholars all over the country.

Judith Manacap of Barangay Manongol, Kidapawan City, landed first runner-up while Susan Inson of Barangay New Dauis, Nabunturan, Compostela Valley was second runner-up.

Malapad, Manacap and Inson received certificates of merit and cash awards.
