Six senior leaders of the Liberal Party (LP) declared yesterday their support for President Arroyo in next years presidential elections.
They are Manila Rep. Rodolfo Bacani, LP secretary general; Manila Mayor Lito Atienza, executive vice president; Eleazar Quinto, executive director; Western Samar Rep, Eduardo Antonio Nachura, vice president for the Visayas; Housing Secretary Michael Defensor and Trade and Industry Secretary Manuel Roxas II.
"The President has a solid and long history of relationship with the Liberal Party rooted from her father, the late President Diosdado Macapagal, who is also known as Mr. Liberal," the six LP leaders said in a joint statement.
"She presently enjoys the distinction of being the honorary chairperson, and former Senate president Jovito Salonga serving (as) chairman emeritus," the statement said.
The LP leaders said their stand is a "preliminary" declaration since the 23-member LP contingent in the House of Representatives will meet next week to draw up a final declaration.
Atienza said Mrs. Arroyo is a hardworking leader, who is needed for the country to progress and develop.
"Her experience and determination (are) what we need for a president," he said.
Defensor said the dedication and work ethic of Mrs. Arroyo is awe-inspiring.
"Her heart for the poor and the brilliance of her mind will push this country forward," he said.
Roxas said Mrs. Arroyo is needed to boost the countrys economy and uplift the welfare of the people.
"The two years I have worked with President Arroyo were two years of work, work and work." he said. "She can pass as the Guinness books hardest working president."
Only Mrs. Arroyo can effectively and efficiently implement the reforms and changes that are being undertaken, Nachura said.
