Pro-GMA senators to discuss race for presidency

All pro-administration senators will meet tonight to discuss the tightening race for the Senate presidency.

Newly re-elected Sen. Juan Flavier said that the informal gathering will involve only those who are not contenders for the top Senate post. He said he is not interested in the post "unless all aspirants kill one another and I am the only one left."

The aspirants for the Senate presidency of the incoming Congress are Senate President Aquilino Pimentel Jr., Senate Minority Leader Renato Cayetano, and newly re-elected Sen. Franklin Drilon, a former Senate president.

The eight-member strong opposition is expected to field Senate "returnee" Edgardo Angara, also a former Senate president.

Although pro-administration senators hold the majority, they belong to different political parties and they still have not decided on the lone nominee to support against Angara.

Flavier said that all Lakas senators have agreed to support Cayetano.

"The problem is we are only five Lakas senators. That is why I am asking Senator Cayetano to talk with Senator Drilon," Flavier said.

He stressed that nobody in the majority coalition could expect to get support from the opposition, so it is up to the majority to get their act together. – Efren Danao
