A member of the Philippine National Police assigned at the Cordillera Administrative Region in Ifugao was intercepted yesterday by alert private security guards while in possession of two hand grenades in a clutch bag while entering a parking area of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
PO3 Jesus Gavejon surrendered the two hand grenades when the security guards started searching his vehicle. Gavejon was turned over to the Philippine National police Directorate for Investigation.
Gavejon claimed that he came all the way from Ifugao to fetch his brother who was arriving from abroad and had forgotten to remove the hand grenades from his clutch bag.
Strict security measures have been set in place in the entire complex of the NAIA following incidents of bombings in Metro-Manila which have already claimed the lives of two innocent persons and injured several others.
All vehicles and persons entering the airport complex are searched as airport authorities reported that they have been receiving continuous bomb threats from unknown callers.
Airport General Manager Antonio Gana also ordered a limit in the number of well-wishers at the two NAIA terminals and prohibited parking in sensitive areas where all unauthorized vehicles will be towed away.
NAIA security units are also checking all unattended baggage at the airport. K9 dogs sniff all baggage of both arriving and departing passengers.
