New storm nears; Signal No. 1 raised

- by Felix De Los Santos -

Tropical depression "Konsing" continued to threaten Northern Luzon yesterday, prompting the weather bureau to hoist public storm signal No. 1 over the Ilocos provinces, La Union, Abra, Mountain Province, Kalinga Apayao, Cagayan and the Batanes group of islands.

As of 4 p.m. yesterday, Konsing's center was estimated at 170 kilometers north-northeast of Laoag, Ilocos Norte or 140 kilometers southwest of Basco, Batanes with maximum center winds of 55 kilometers per hour, according to the Phi-lippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Konsing is expected to move east-northeast at 19 kilometers per hour and is forecast to be at 250 kilometers east-northeast of Basco, Batanes or 430 kilometers northeast of Aparri, Cagayan this afternoon.

PAGASA said rains and winds of up to 55 kph and moderate to rough coastal waters will be experienced in the Ilocos provinces, La Union, Mountain Province, Kalinga Apayao, Cagayan, and the Batanes group of islands.

As "Konsing" gains strength within the next 12 to 24 hours, monsoon rains will be experienced over the rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, and Western Visayas as a monsoon trough is across Northern Luzon and a tropical convergence zone affects Mindanao.

The National Mapping and Resources Information Authority said 1.06-meter high tide will occur in Manila Bay at 11:41 this morning and 0.09-meter low tide at 8:23 tonight.

In Baguio City, the lowest temperature was forecast at 16 degrees centigrade, while the highest was reported in Metro Davao at 33 degrees centigrade.
