35th anniversary of EDSA People Power Revolution
In a message on the 35th anniversary of People Power, President Rodrigo Duterte calls for "renewed hope and optimism towards the realization of our shared aspirations as a nation."
"May this serve as a constant reminder for all of us to remain vigilant in safeguarding out democratic institutions, preserving our values and upholding our rights as Filipinos."
He calls on Filipinos to set aside differences and to work together "in building a legacy that we can proudly leave behind for future generations of Filipinos."
Samahan ng Ex-Detainees Laban sa Detensyon at Aresto (SELDA), an organization of Martial Law victims and survivors, remember the martyrs of the Marcos years and the Filipino people who resisted and eventually ousted Ferdinand Marcos.
"Eerily, thirty five long years after People Power, we feel like it's 1970s all over again. Human rights violations are lamentably heightened every single day. The government is again focused on spreading fake information and creating its own demons in the guise of "counter-insurgency programs" and outright red-tagging," the group warns.
"The judiciary and legislative bodies are again dominated by the administration's allies and pawns. More importantly, all lead to one common denominator: another dictator is threatening our democracy in the name of Rodrigo Duterte."
