A powerful 7.3 magnitude quake struck off the coast of Indonesia's Maluku province in the early hours of Thursday, the United States Geological Survey said in a statement.

There were no immediate reports of tsunami warnings, nor casualties or damage. 

The offshore quake took place around 3:25 am local time (1825 GMT Wednesday) and hit at a depth of 166 kilometers (103 miles), about 120 kilometers northeast of the town of Lospalos. — AFP

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck the waters south of Balut Island, Sarangani on Sunday morning.

Phivolcs says the quake was recorded at around 10:22 a.m.

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck Batangas at around 5:12 p.m. on Monday, Phivolcs says.

Intensity III was felt in Quezon City while Intensity II was reported in San Felipe, Zambales.

Instrumental Intensity I was also felt in Quezon City; Tagaytay City; Batangas City and Calatagan, Batangas.

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck northern Peru on Sunday, destroying buildings including a church tower, injuring at least 10 people and sending shock waves across the region.

The strong quake hit at 5:52 am (1052 GMT) at a depth of 131 kilometers (81 miles), according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru.

Civil Defense authorities said at least 10 people were injured, while several houses were destroyed. — AFP

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake strikes off the Philippines on Thursday, the United States Geological Survey reports, briefly triggering a tsunami warning.

The quake hit 63.3 kilometres (39.2 miles) east of Pondaguitan on Mindanao, the country's second largest island, around 1:45 am (1745 GMT) at a depth of 65 km, the USGS said. 

A tsunami warning was issued briefly, according to the US Tsunami Warning System, which said the threat had passed around two hours after the quake. — AFP

An 8.2 magnitude earthquake strikes off the Alaskan peninsula late Wednesday, the United States Geological Survey says, prompting a tsunami warning.

The earthquake hit 56 miles (91 kilometers) southeast of the town of Perryville, the USGS said. The US government issues a tsunami warning for south Alaska and the Alaskan peninsula.

"Hazardous tsunami waves for this earthquake are possible within the next three hours along some coasts," the US Tsunami Warning System says in a statement. — AFP

Two earthquakes struck the waters of Surigao del Norte on Sunday morning, Phivolcs says.

The first earthquake felt at 10:59 a.m. was magnitude 5.2, which was located 97 kilometers east of Burgos, Surigao del Norte.

A magnitude 5.8 tremor was also reported 72 km east of Burgos at around 11:20 a.m.

There is no tsunami threat to the Philippines following a magnitude 8-1 earthquake that struck the Kermadec Islands Region early Friday, state volcanologists say.

Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center earlier warned that tsunami waves are possible for coasts near the earthquake epicenter.

Evacuations from coastal areas were ordered in New Zealand, New Caledonia and Vanuatu Friday as tsunami waves were observed following a cluster of powerful South Pacific earthquakes, authorities said.

"Tsunami waves have been observed," the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said, revealing ocean gauges had picked up small waves near the Tonga capital Nuku'alofa measuring about three centimetres (1.3 inches).

Tsunamis become more powerful as they travel across the ocean and the centre has warned some areas including Vanuatu and the French territory of New Caledonia could be hit by waves of up to three metres after three major quakes, the largest at 8.1 magnitude. —  AFP

A Pacific-wide tsunami alert was issued Friday after a 8.1-magnitude earthquake struck near New Zealand's remote Kermadec islands, following on from two powerful quakes earlier.

New Zealand ordered coastal evacuations as the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned waves of up to three metres (10 feet) were possible in the Pacific region nations of Vanuatu and the French territory of New Caledonia.

"Based on all available data, hazardous tsunami waves are forecast for some coasts," it said.

It said smaller waves were possible as far afield as Japan, Russia, Mexico and the South American coast. —  AFP

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental at around 8:23 p.m. on Thursday, PHIVOLCS says.

Intensity V was felt in General Santos City while Davao City reported Intensity IV. Bislig City in Surigao del Sur also reported Intensity II.
