Eastern Samar quake

Those occupying establishments in Cebu evacuated following the 6.5-magnitude earthquake whose epicenter was in San Julian, Eastern Samar, The Freeman reported.

The Cebu City Council's regular session was also suspended as engineers check on the edifice of the Cebu Provincial Capitol.

The Eastern Samar earthquake caused some cracks in the municipal building and a church in San Julian, where the epicenter was located.

"Wala pang major structures na gumuho so far," says San Julian Information Officer Irene Consultado in a phone patch interview on ANC.

PHIVOLCS reports Intensity 6 or "very strong" rocking was experienced in San Julian.

Intensity 5 or "strong" shaking was also recorded for neighboring areas of Tacloban City; Catbalogan City, Samar; Gen. Mc Arthur, Salcedo and Guiuan Eastern Samar; Naval, Biliran; Catarman, Northern Samar; Palo and Pastrana, Leyte.


State volcanology bureau PHIVOLCS revises its earlier recording of the earthquake in Eastern Samar from magnitude 6.2 to 6.5, a few minutes after its initial report.

It also reported a higher intensity ground shaking in San Julian, Eastern Samar at Intensity 6 characterized as "very strong" that could displace furniture and heavy objects.
