Police General Oscar Albayalde, Philippine National Police chief, greets President Rodrigo Duterte a happy birthday on behalf of the 190,000 men and women of the PNP.

"We wish you good health and long life and we would like to assure you that the PNP is behind you in all your advocacies and thrusts against illegal drugs, criminality and corruption," he says.

"With your great leadership we can make our country great and strong," he also says.

The Palace wishes President Rodrigo Duterte a sound mind and a healthy body as he celebrates his 74th birthday on Thursday, March 28.

State-run Philippine News Agency quotes presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo as saying: "As Mayor Duterte celebrates his 74th birthday, we pray the Almighty to continue giving him a sound mind and a healthy body, that he may finish the goals he had set for the betterment of the country and people that he loved so well towards a future of progress and prosperity."

Duterte prefers to be addressed as mayor, his role in Davao City for more than two decades.

"From a local public servant, he had evolved to be a force with national constituency catapulting him to the zenith of political power as the chief executive and head of state," PNA also quotes Panelo as saying.

The president has said he does not want a grand celebration for his birthday.

"Historically, ayaw ko talagang mag-celebrate ng birthday. Gusto ko sa bahay lang matulog ako (I don’t really want to celebrate my birthday. I just want to stay home and sleep). And if there’s somebody that is really welcome to me, ‘yung mga anak ko, pati ‘yung apo ko (that will be my children and my grandchildren)," the president said at a campaign rally in South Cotabato this week.

"The presidency has not changed his simple lifestyle, no frills but certainly plenty of thrills," Panelo says in the PNA report.

Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar praises the president in his birthday greeting: "Destiny designed your name: Rodrigo Roa Duterte, 74 years ago on this day, to lead that we may follow and to follow that we may live, your noble cause within our lives."

"Happy birthday, President Duterte!" he also says.
