The Cebu City government has formally turned over P85,000 donated by City Hall workers as well as assorted goods to the City of Naga.

At least 45 Bureau of Fire Protection personnel from regional offices in the Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas and Northern Mindanao are meanwhile heading home after 16 days of assisting search and rescue, and retrieval operations in Naga, which was hit by a massive landslide on September 20.

The Department of Trade and Industry has announced a price freeze on basic goods as a result of a state of calamity declared over landslide-hit Naga City in Cebu.

The city government made the declaration of a state of calamity on September 21, a day after a massive landslide that buried more than 20 houses and has left at least 72 people dead, according to reports by The Freeman.

Under the Price Act, a declaration of a state of calamity, automatically freezes prices "at their prevailing prices" or placed under price controls.

The price freeze will be in place for 60 days unless the local government lifts the declaration.

Goods covered by the price freeze include sardines (P14.95 to P16.15 for a 155g can), processed milk, coffee (P16.45-P19.50 for 25g sachets; P33.50-P39.40 for 50g sachets), detergent/laundry soap, instant noodles (P6.30-P7.30 per 55g pouch), and bottled water (P9.90 to P13.50 per 500ml bottle).

The casualty count for the September 20 landslide in Naga City, Cebu has climbed to 65 as of Thursday afternoon.

Earlier Thursday, Cebu City Assistant Administrator Annabeth Cuizon said the city government is willing to fund a project for the landslide victims, subject to the approval of Mayor Tomas Osmeña.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza was also set to turn over to Naga City Mayor Kristine Chiong P2 million in aid for the landslide victims. – reports from The Freeman

Death toll in Naga City, Cebu landslide now at 63 as of 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, The Freeman reports. 

Eighteen have been listed wounded while 28 remain missing.

"For now, the sign of life kay lisod na gyud (would be very difficult)," PDRRMO head Baltazar Tribunalo says.

Ongoing operations now intended to retrieve the bodies of the victims as recommended by Mayor Kristine Chiong.

MGB to determine 'no-build zones'

"[Mines and Geosciences Bureau] geologists and mining engineers here in Naga to determine the areas near ground zero as no-build zone. They also have to assess the proposed relocation site if it is safe and suitable for habitation," Mayor Chiong says.

The City of Naga lists 45 people still missing after the massive landslide last Thursday, The Freeman reports.

The city also lists 51 fatalities, nine of whom have yet to be identified.

Cemex Holdings says subsidiary Apo Cement is considering alternative measures following the cease-and-desist order against mining operations in Naga City, particularly the quarrying operations of Apo Land and Quarry Corp., the Freeman reports.

Meanwhile, 20 of 51 confirmed dead in the landslide last week will be laid to rest today.

According to The Freeman on Sunday, the number of missing has gone down to 40 from 64. Search and rescue operations are ongoing.

Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III has recommended to the Provincial Board to approve P10,000 in financial assistance to each family of those who died in the landslide.

Capitol will also donate P1M to the City of Naga and is planning to donate a portion of the Balili property as relocation site for the landslide victims.

Cebu City residents have meanwhil been bringing donations and relief goods to Cebu City Hall. The relief will be turned over to landslide victims this week.

 

More than 4,900 people have been staying at evacuation centers in the Enan Chiong Activity Center, Naga Central School, Naga National High School, Naalad Elementary School, and the covered court of APO CEMEX since last week.

Apo Land and Quarry Corp. says it has no quarrying activity in Sitio Tagaytay, Brgy Tinaan, City of Naga, Cebu near landslide-hit area, The Freeman reports.
Apo admitted it has mining rights over the area but maintains it has not started any quarrying activity there, just road access development.

President Rodrigo Duterte will conduct an aerial inspection of the landslide-hit area in City of Naga, Cebu and visit evacuation centers this afternoon, The Freeman reports.

The city government, on its Facebook page, says it has designated evacuation centers for more than 300 families who evacuated the area on Thursday at the Enan Chiong Activity Center, APO CEMEX covered court, Naalad Elementary School coverd court and Cepoc Tinaan Elementary School.

As of midnight on Friday, rescue and retrieval teams have recovered 21 bodies from the landslide in the City of Naga in Cebu, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office head Baltazar Tribunalo says over radio DZMM.

He said around 60 more people listed missing have yet to be found.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau in the Central Visayas says it is coordinating with the provincial government on rescue operations.

"Earlier, the MGB-7 has issued Advisories to the local government units in the region in relation to intense rainfall occurences due to the enhancement of Habagat," it says.

It also says the public should stay away from the danger zone and recommends rescue teams should take precautionary measures "as there may be continuous movement in the landslide area."

The City of Naga has evacuated 315 families and five barangays—Tinaan, Mainit, Naalad, Pangdan, and Cabungahan—after a massive landslide that has killed four and injured six.

Naga City Mayor Kristine Chiong says the area hit by the landslide is "near" a quarry site that the city had issed a cease-and-desist order against in August.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office says the landslide in Barangay Tinaan in the City of Naga has buried around 26 houses, The Freeman reports.

Rescue and retrieval teams have confirmed the deaths of Olivia Menesis (63), Abel Lobiano (40), Romeo Jabonilla (50), and a 4-year-old child.

Those injured and brought to Talisay District Hospital were Rose Ann Lobiano (40), Christopher Cemelier (44), and Nestor Capoy (52).

Search and rescue operations are ongoing in Barangay Tinaan in Naga City, Cebu after a landslide there, The Freeman reports.

According to reports, the landslide was triggered by rain in the area.
