Carlos Alcaraz vows to "grow up" after his reign as US Open champion was brought to an abrupt end in a semi-final defeat to Daniil Medvedev.
The 20-year-old Spaniard, who surged to victory in the US Open as a teenager last year to claim his maiden Grand Slam title, had said earlier this week he was a more mature, stronger opponent this season.
However Alcaraz abruptly revised that assessment in the wake of his shattering 7-6 (7/3), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 defeat. — AFP
Novak Djokovic earns himself another shot at a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title after beating unseeded American Ben Shelton in straight setsto advance to his 10th US Open final.
Djokovic ended the run of the 20-year-old Shelton, winning 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7/4) to set up a potential repeat of his Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz, who faces Daniil Medvedev in the other semi-final.
"Another Grand Slam final. I cannot be happier with where I am," says Djokovic, who signed off victory in his 100th US Open match by imitating Shelton's hang-up-the-phone celebration. — AFP

Daniil Medvedev will play Russian compatriot and close friend Andrey Rublev in the US Open quarter-finals after defeating Australian 13th seed Alex de Minaur in four sets on Monday.
Third seed Medvedev fought back from a set down to brush De Minaur aside 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 as he bids to add a second US Open crown following his maiden Grand Slam title in New York two years ago.
"The conditions were some of the most brutal we’ve ever played," Medvedev said of the hot and humid conditions in Louis Armstrong Stadium. — AFP
Carlos Alcaraz stayed firmly on course to defend his US Open title Monday as he reached the quarter-finals with a straight-sets win over Italy's Matteo Arnaldi.
Alcaraz eased past the 61st-ranked Arnaldi 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 under the roof on Arthur Ashe Stadium and will face sixth seed Jannik Sinner or 2020 runner-up Alexander Zverev for a place in the semi-finals.

Frances Tiafoe advanced to an all-American US Open quarter-final after defeating Australia's Rinky Hijikata in straight sets.
Tiafoe, seeded 10th, produced a disciplined performance to dominate Hijikata on the way to a 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 victory on the Louis Armstrong Stadium court at Flushing Meadows.
