Typhoon Haikui (Philippine name Hanna) toppled hundreds of trees, damaged coastal roads and dumped torrential rains across Taiwan Monday before it weakened into a severe storm and headed for southern China.
Haikui had initially appeared to depart the island but made a second landfall early Monday in southwest Kaohsiung, before it was downgraded to a severe tropical storm as it moved out into the Taiwan Strait.
There were no reports of deaths, but destruction was seen in coastal Taitung, a mountainous county in lesser-populated eastern Taiwan where the storm directly hit the day before. — AFP

It is 5 a.m. tropical cyclone bulletin, Hanna was spotted 265 kilometers northwest of Itbayat, Batanes, packing maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph.
It was moving south southwestward slowly. Only Batanes remains under Signal No. 1.
PAGASA says Typhoon Hanna may leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility on late Sunday or early Monday after threatening the country with heavy rain and strong wind.
In its 5 p.m. tropical cyclone bulletin, Hanna was spotted 245 kilometers to the northwest of Itbayat in Batanes..
Hanna has maximum sustained winds of 155 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 190 kph. It was heading west northwest at 20 kph.
The typhoon made a landfall over Taitung county in Taiwan.
Typhoon Haikui (Philippine name Hanna) made landfall on eastern Taiwan Sunday, the first major storm to directly hit the island in four years.
"The typhoon made landfall in Taitung around 3:40 pm (0740 GMT), it's a little earlier than expected as it's moving faster," the Central Weather Bureau's forecaster Yeh Chih-chun tells AFP.

As of 4 a.m. on Saturday, Hanna was spotted 215 kilometers north northeast of Itbayat, Batanes, packing with maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 185 kph.
It was moving westward at 20 kph.
Signal No. 1 is raised over Batanes and the northern portion of Babuyan Islands (Babuyan Is., Calayan Is.).
PAGASA says Typhoon Hanna has continued to intensify as it accelerated west northwestward towards the sea east of Taiwan.
Hanna was last spotted 375 kilometers east northeast of Itbayat, Batanes, with maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 170 kph.
It was moving west northwestward at 20 kph. Signal No. 1 remained hoisted over Batanes.

It was moving westward at 10 kph.
Signal No. 1 has been raised over Batanes.

The typhoon is less likely to directly bring heavy rainfall and severe winds and over the country throughout the forecast period.
"However, the southwest monsoon currently enhanced by Hanna, Typhoon Saola (Goring), and Severe Tropical Storm Kirogi will bring occasional to monsoon rains over the western portion of Luzon in the next three days," PAGASA says.
