Lizzo on Sunday won the Grammy for Record of the Year -- the award honoring overall performance of a song -- for her single "About Damn Time," besting a crowded field including Beyonce and Adele.

Scoring the prize is something of a comeback for Lizzo, who was widely tipped to be the big winner in 2020 but lost all her chances at a major award to pop phenom Billie Eilish.

She dedicated the prize to the late pop icon Prince, her lifelong hero with whom she also worked.

"We are good inherently," she said through tears in a speech that brought the audience to its feet. "And anybody at home who feels misunderstood or on the outside looking in, like I did, just stay true to yourself."

"I promise you, you will find people, you will attract people in your life who believe in you and support you."

Lizzo soared into the global consciousness in 2019, seducing legions of fervent fans with her soulful self-love anthems, zesty raps and even the occasional twerk.

The 31-year-old artist born Melissa Viviane Jefferson debuted in 2013 but did not achieve mainstream success until the release of her third studio album "Cuz I Love You."

The hitmaker returned last year with a new 12-track record "Special," and will embark on a global tour this month.

The Detroit-born, Houston-raised performer with a big voice developed a hankering for hip-hop as a pre-teen but originally aspired to a career as a professional flutist.

She relocated to Minneapolis in 2011 -- an ultimately career-changing move that led her to encounter the Midwest's favorite son Prince, who co-signed her to work with him.

In her speech, Lizzo also gave special thanks to Queen Bey: "You changed my life," she said, as both of them teared up.

"The way you made me feel, I was like, I want to make people feel this way with my music. So thank you so much. You clearly are the artist of our lives!"

Harry Styles on Sunday won the coveted Grammy for Album of the Year, a surprising victory over heavy favorites Beyonce and Adele.

The pop sensation scored the award for his third album "Harry's House," his most intimate yet, which combined twangy synths and soft acoustics with very personal lyrics.

"This doesn't happen to people like me very often, and this is so nice," he said onstage.

US jazz singer Samara Joy on Sunday won the coveted Grammy for Best New Artist, coming out atop an eclectic field that included Italian rockers Maneskin and the Brazilian pop phenom Anitta.

The Bronx-raised 23-year-old grew up surrounded by musicians, with a family history in gospel and a steady diet of Motown and soul.

It was her second Grammy of the night, after the award for Best Jazz Vocal Album.

The New York Youth Symphony on Sunday won the Grammy for best orchestral performance -- the first youth orchestra to do so.

The kids in the ensemble ranged in age from 12 to 22 when they recorded the album during the pandemic's darkest days.

At Sunday's show celebrating the best in music, they beat some of the world's most elite orchestras -- including the Berlin and Los Angeles philharmonics, with conductors John Williams and Gustavo Dudamel, respectively -- to take home the prize.

"I'm speechless," conductor Michael Repper, 32, told AFP backstage after accepting the award.

"I have about 97 text messages on my phone that I can't wait to go through -- they are flying off the rails with pride in their own work and that brings a tear to my eye."

Pandemic restrictions meant recording the album could only happen in smaller groups, meaning the young artists had to wear headphones and use a click track for cues, and the different parts were later synchronized.

The untitled album that celebrates Black composers was produced by Judith Sherman, who this year also added another Grammy to her collection, for classical producer of the year.

"This entire project is a testament to the awesome, awesome impact that young people can have," Repper said.

"This is a great moment not just for our orchestra, but for young people everywhere."

Music's brightest stars on Sunday brought their fashion A-game to the Grammys red carpet, strutting their stuff in bold colors, slinky styles, major bling and barely-there gowns.

While the Oscars are known for embracing a certain brand of Hollywood glamour, the Grammys are in your face: some of the most iconic fashion looks have emerged on music's biggest night, like Jennifer Lopez's plunging green Versace gown in 2000.

Here's a look at what the A-listers wore to the Grammys: https://www.philstar.com/lifestyle/fashion-and-beauty/2023/02/06/2242960/grammys-red-carpet-bold-colors-basic-black-bling

The 65th annual Grammys gala began Sunday in Los Angeles with a performance from reggaeton megastar Bad Bunny, as top nominee Beyonce was poised to break the all-time record for the most awards ever.

Her love letter to club music "Renaissance" propelled her to the front of the Grammy pack with nine nominations, and she won two trophies in the pre-show.

She has several more chances as the main show begins, and will become the winningest artist ever if she wins two more.

Bad Bunny is another A-lister up for major awards, along with Taylor Swift, Adele and Harry Styles.
