The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology records a magnitude 2.1 quake in Zamboanga del Norte.

In its earthquake information, Phivolcs says that the mild quake occured at 2:45 p.m.

Its epicenter was located 07.52°North, 121.98°East - 019 kilometers South 69° West of Sirawai, Zamboanga Del Norte.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology records a magnitude 2.2 earthquake in Aurora at 5:15 p.m.

Its epicenter was traced16.21°North, 122.27°Eeast - 018 kilometers South 64° East of Casiguran, Aurora.

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake killed two people in western Afghanistan Sunday, with damaged prisons emptied and residents fleeing a region where tremors have claimed at least 1,000 lives this past week.

Since October 7, a series of potent quakes have jolted Herat province, levelling whole villages, burying families and leaving thousands homeless as winter approaches.

Residents in the provincial capital Herat city had just begun returning to their homes, after days of sleeping outside fearing aftershocks, when the latest earthquake hit around 8:00 am (0330 GMT) on Sunday. — AFP

The US Geological Survey says a shallow 6.3 magnitude earthquake rocked western Afghanistan on Sunday, the latest to hit a region where entire villages have been flattened and over 1,000 killed by a series of tremors this month.

The quake hit at 0336 GMT, 33 kilometers (20 miles) from Herat city, the capital of the western province of the same name, the USGS says.

On October 7, another magnitude 6.3 quake and eight powerful aftershocks jolted the same part of Herat, toppling swathes of rural homes and killing over 1,000 people and wounding hundreds more. — AFP

Its epicenter was located 08.45°North, 126.67°East - 038 kilometers North 75° East of Hinatuan, Surigao Del Sur.

Its epicenter was traced 06.73°North, 125.13°East - 004 kilometers South 44° West of Magsaysay, Davao Del Sur.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology records a magnitude 2.0 earthquake at 1:15 p.m. in Lanao del Sur.

Its epicenter was located 07.62°North, 123.82°East - 017 kilometers South 71° West of Picong, Lanao Del Sur.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology records a magnitude 2.6 quake in Occidental Mindoro at 6:32 p.m.

Its epicenter was located 13.70°North, 120.30°East - 006 km S 66° E of Looc, Occidental Mindoro.

No aftershock is expected following the mild quake.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology records a magnitude 1.8 quake in Southern Leyte at 4:07 p.m.

Its epicenter was located 10.01°North, 125.26°East - 007 kilometers N 11° E of Pintuyan, Southern Leyte.

No aftershocks are expected following the mild quake.


September 25, 2023

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology records a magnitude 3.3 quake at 1:45 p.m.

Its epicenter was located 12.17°North, 125.06°East - 014 kilometer North 18° East of San Jose De Buan, Samar.

Phivolcs said no aftershock is expected.


September 24, 2023

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology records a magnitude 2.5 quake in Davao Oriental at 1:46 p.m.

The mild quake's epicenter was traced 07.40°North, 126.64°East - 011 kilometer North 45° East of Caraga, Davao Oriental.

There are no expected aftershocks from the tremor.


September 21, 2023

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology records a magnitude 4.2 earthquake in Surigao del Norte at 4:22 p.m. on Thursday.

Its epicenter was traced 10.32°North, 126.24°East - 038 kilometer North 28° East of Burgos, Surigao Del Norte.

Phivolcs says it was felt at Intensity I in Surigao City, Surigao del Norte and Hinunangan, Southern Leyte.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology records a magnitude 1.7 quake in Camarines Sur.

The mild quake's epicenter was traced 13.86°North, 122.81°East- 004 kilometer North 24° East of Ragay, Camarines Sur.

It is tectonic in origin.


September 12, 2023

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology records a 1.7 quake in Surigao del Norte.

As of 7:04 p.m., its epicenter was located at 09.95°N, 126.13°E - 005 km N 77° E of San Isidro, Surigao Del Norte.

The quake has a depth of focus of 23 kilometers.

A magnitude 3.4 earthquake jolts Davao Oriental on Sunday morning.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reports that the quake occurred at 11:04 a.m.

The tremor's epicenter was located 45 kilomters South 82° of Bangaga, Davao Oriental.


August 21, 2023

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reports a Magnitude 1.7 quake in Batangas.

The tremor occured at 12:19 p.m. Its epicenter 14.10°north, 120.45°east - 020 kilometers north 81° west of Nasugbu, Batangas.

The quake has a depth of focus of 119 km.


August 1, 2023

A magnitude 5.3 quake was recorded in Cagayan, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reports.

Phivolcs says the tremor, tectonic in origin, was recorded at 19.34°N, 121.22°E - 026 km N 03° E of Dalupiri Island, Calayan, Cagayan.

It adds that the quake was felt at the following varying intensities in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and Cagayan.

The tremor, tectonic in origin, has depth of focus of 112 kilometers.

A tsunami warning was issued for some areas of the US state of Alaska after a shallow 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck at 0648 GMT Sunday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The offshore quake hit at a depth of 13 miles (21 kilometres) off the Alaskan peninsula, the USGS said. — AFP

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology records a magnitude 4.2 quake in Governor Generoso, Davao Occidental at around 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, June 20.

Phivolcs said the tremor was felt at Intensity I in Kiamba, Sarangani. Intensity I quakes are described as "scarcely perceptible" wherein delicately balanced objects are slightly disturbed while still water in containers oscillates slowly.

The US Geological Survey says a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the Philippines on Thursday, as local authorities warn of aftershocks and possible damage. 

The earthquake struck at a depth of 124 kilometres (77 miles) at around 10:00 a.m. (0200 GMT) in waters about three hours' drive from the capital Manila. 

Calatagan municipality police chief Emil Mendoza said he and his staff rushed outside following the tremor, which was also felt over the country's heavily populated heartland, including Manila. — AFP

A 4.2-magnitude quake jolted Ragay town in Camarines Sur around 6:16 p.m. on Wednesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology says in an advisory.

Phivolcs adds that damage may be expected, although aftershocks are unlikely.

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck the waters off Dinapigue in Isabela at 2:43 p.m. on Sunday, Phivolcs reports.

It says that there are no damage or aftershocks that are to be expected from the quake.

The US Geological Survey says a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Saturday in the Pacific Ocean to the east of New Caledonia, a day after a major quake hit the same area.

The epicenter was 35 kilometers (22 miles) deep and located about 300 kilometers (190 miles) east of the New Caledonian archipelago, it says.

"It lasted maybe two seconds, not too big," says Nancy Jack, manager of the beachfront Friendly Beach Bungalows on the Vanuatu island of Kana, adding that no large waves could be seen. — AFP

US monitoring agencies say a major 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Friday in the Pacific Ocean southeast of New Caledonia, triggering a tsunami warning.

The quake was detected at a depth of 37 kilometers (23 miles), the US Geological Service say.

"Based on the preliminary earthquake parameters, hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts within 1,000 km (620 miles) of the earthquake epicentre," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says in a bulletin. — AFP

Phivolcs says a 5.5-magnitude quake hit the waters of Nasipit town of Agusan Del Norte at 5:32 p.m. of Monday.

No damage is expected from the quake, although aftershocks may be felt.

The bulletin shows that the reported instrumental intensities are as follows:

  • Intensity II – Surigao del City, Surigao del Norte.

State seismologists say in a bulletin that they don’t expect damage from the quake, but aftershocks may be felt.

A powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake shook a remote region of northwestern Papua New Guinea before dawn Monday, toppling a few homes but with no immediate reports of casualties.

The quake struck at a depth of  62 kilometres (38 miles) near the Chambri Lake system in the sparsely populated region of East Sepik Province, the US Geological Service said.

"So far, we have lost a few houses, it is fortunate for us that no life (is) lost," a member of parliament in the area, Johnson Wapunai, said in a message on social media.

"Chambri lake is boiling and the continuous quake is still happening right now," he wrote more than five hours after the quake, which occurred at about 4:00 am local time. — AFP

A magnitude 6.1 quake struck off Aomori in northern Japan on Tuesday, the national weather agency says, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake hit at 6:18 pm (0918 GMT) at a depth of 20 kilometres (12 miles), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

A magnitude 5.0-quake jolted Mindanao’s Caraga region on Sunday past noon, Phivolcs says.

In an advisory, state seismologists say that the epicenter of the quake, which was tectonic in origin, was traced to Tandag City in Surigao del Sur. Up to Intensity III was felt in the said area, it adds.

Phivolcs say they do not expect damages, but aftershocks may be experienced.

A 6.0-magnitude quake jolted Balut Island in Sarangani, Davao Occidental at 10:13 a.m., Tuesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reports.

The quake is tectonic in origin, and no damage is expected although aftershocks may be experienced, state seismologists add. 


An offshore 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit near eastern Indonesia's Maluku islands on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey reports, triggering a tsunami warning.

The epicentre of the tremor was located 150 kilometres (93 miles) northwest of the eastern Indonesian island of Halmahera, at a depth of 60 kilometres, USGS said. The NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said "hazardous tsunami waves are possible" 300 kilometres from the epicentre. — AFP
