Never use harsh or drying cleaners

- Nicholas V. Perricone, M.D. -

Q: I am a 47-year-old black female who still has occasional break-outs, plus extremely oily skin. I have used all types of oil-control products but nothing works to my satisfaction. What products have been proven to be the best on my type of skin and what line of makeup would help me look great all day?

A: It is very important that you closely follow the anti-inflammatory diet and avoid greasy and starchy foods as these will directly contribute to an increase in oil. A smart, anti-inflammatory diet can really control excess oiliness. There is also an excellent product known as Clinac O.C. Oil control gel, which works immediately to control excessive sebum accumulation on the face. Clinac O.C. contains invisible micro-particles that absorb excess oil. Best of all it is non-irritating. Also, never use harsh or drying cleansers as they will cause a “rebound reaction” in which your oil glands are forced to work overtime in an attempt to counteract the dryness caused by the type of cleanser. Instead, cleanse gently and thoroughly twice a day with an anti-inflammatory cleanser.

Will microdermabrasion help?

Q: What do you think about microdermabrasion treatments? Will they help me to get rid of my acne scars and even out the skin tone on my face?

A: I don’t think microdermabrasion will help much. The less you do with mechanical therapies the better. These are extreme forms of treatment and can leave you with more discolorations, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and other problems.

A dual-personality skin

Q: I’ve been told that my face is a “complex skin type.” That is, while my cheeks are often oily, my chin and the area around my nose are usually dry. Please tell me the best way to take care of my dual-personality skin, and what products are best for me.

A: Always use a skin cleanser that has anti-inflammatory properties and is not harsh or drying the way soap can be. Try a toner or toner pads that contain DMAE on the oilier portions of your face, and use an oil-free moisturizer on the dry areas. Take antioxidants and essential fatty acids to help your skin from the inside out!
