Silent sanctuary

PENNY LANE - PENNY LANE By Rebecca C. Rodriguez -
With all the hustle and bustle of work, meeting deadlines and other stressful situations, we tend to forget to take care of ourselves. This form of neglect isn’t healthy. Besides, life shouldn’t be as fast as Quintin Tarantino sequence but rather beautiful instead.

Call me spoiled, but whenever I get stressed, the first thing I do to unwind is to have a massage. Home-service ones are okay but it’s really different if you get pampered in a spa. Not only do I get instant relaxation and a rejuvenated mind, but it just makes me feel good to treat myself like a queen for a moment there.

Dig this, you do not have to go out of town just to relax and unwind. And if you live and work around the Ortigas area, you need not look far. Just recently, The Spa opened its newest branch at the Podium. Stressed-out people can experience soothing hands, aromatic oils, flower-filled baths that relax the mind, body and soul.

"We decided to put The Spa branch in Ortigas because it is a business center," says, Richard Uy, executive manager of The Spa. "Podium is near everything. So, office workers can just go there and even parents can have treatments while the kids watch movies." Indeed, a strategic location.

The Spa is an accredited member of the International Spa Association (ISPA) and boasts a wide array of services. There are body massage therapies, head and shoulder massages, foot care, body care treatments and even facial treatments to suit your ever-changing needs. Plus, annual membership packages as well for those obsessed with the ultimate relaxation. Oh, the high life!

The face of The Spa is Angel Aquino who graces the company’s brochures and print ads. Robert Dean Barbers, general manager and chief executive officer of the Philippine Tourism Authority, even endorsed The Spa. He said, "The Spa has made people more conscious of an alternative lifestyle that embodies the ideals of healing, transformation and fusion of the body and spirit. The Spa is committed to bringing about a healthy and holistic lifestyle. And it is the company’s way of giving service and dedication in helping push the tourism industry in the Philippines."

The truth is, there are a lot of spas in the city. Perhaps what sets this one apart from others is that The Spa provides high-quality and innovative services. Plus, the company invests in intensive training of therapists and aestheticians as well. You will get the kind of treatment that best suits your standards.

"The Spa prides itself on providing customers the right ambiance and facilities so that they will feel pampered," explains Uy. When you enter The Spa’s Podium branch, you will see a fountain that trickles water down on blue pots. Designed by Ivy Almario and architect Francisco Ong, the "monastic" vibe is so relaxing. Imagine Greek-inspired walls, wooden doors with metal handles, and dim-lit lamps that light the way.

Sad thing is, people have been noticing my zits. Blame it on a hard day’s night and yes, I have been working like a dog. Maybe when I try a few treatments, I will be less stressed and therefore won’t break out that much.

I have yet to try the Traditional Hilot massage or the Oriental Foot Therapy. But from my experience before in the Greenbelt branch, I enjoyed the Swedish massage, which helps soothe sore muscles, increase circulation, and reduce body tension. Plus, I got to use the herbal steam room and take a nice shower as well.

My biggest indulgence is the Indian Head massage. This Champimassage comes from a rich tradition practice that dates back to over a thousand years. I just love this invigorating scalp massage that releases stagnant energy and balances the chakras. So, if you have a terrible migraine that won’t go away, this treatment is definitely for you.

"The Spa definitely elevates the senses to new heights. We want our customers to try everything because they really get more value for their money," concludes Uy.

At last, we get sheer bliss in the city – a silent sanctuary to heal one’s body, mind, and spirit.
