MANILA, Philippines — Meriel de Jesus, also known by her mononym Mrld, put on a show for the screaming fans at yesterday's Samsung Awesome Fest at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City.
The teen hitmaker behind some of the radio-friendly hits of recent times was accompanied by a band as she sang some of her most requested tunes in a six-song set.
The crowd was expectant and winning at the games and shot zones, where they took home prizes from the three-day event by Samsung, including exclusive merchandise and freebies. Some lucky participants took home either the Samsung Galaxy A34 5G or Samsung Galaxy A54 5G.
Mrld hyped the crowd with her first song, "Ikaw Pa Rin." It was followed by the recently released "Just Because."
The third song was a delight for her avid fans as it was the singer's first time singing the song in a performance.
"First time performing this song. Para ito sa lahat ng... Akala nila pipiliin sila pero wala e," she explained before diving into singing "The Fate of the One Not Chosen," a song that many lovelorn listeners can relate to.
Another similarly themed song, "What Are We," was included in her set list.
"'Yung walang label. 'Yung pinapakilig ka pero hindi mo alam kung ano kayo. 'Yung umabot sa point na napatanong ka, 'Ano ba tayo?'" she teased, much to the crowd's amusement.
Mrld sang her smash debut song, "An Art Gallery Could Never Be As Unique As You," a mouthful for a song title that she reportedly recorded when she was 14 in 2019. This single is not only a hit in the Philippines with 63 million streams on Spotify, but also in neighboring Indonesia.
Mrld closed her set with the apt song "Ligaya" to punctuate her public gig.
After Mrld, another rising young Filipino artist, Kenaniah, will take the stage at the Samsung Awesome Fest today, June 25.
Apart from mini-concerts, raffle prizes and giveaways, the fest also encourages the public to trade older phones and get up to P6,000 discount plus P10,000 worth of freebies. Freebies include Galaxy Buds Live, travel adapter and travel case when one gets any of the latest Samsung Galaxy A series from the event.
