Asin's Lolita Carbon sings for free in Palawan

MANILA, Philippines - Lolita Carbon of the 80s band ASIN sings for free in Puerto Princesa this Friday as a culminating event of an environmental themed art exhibit for the province of Palawan.

Northern portions of the province suffered the onslaught of typhoon Haiyan in the past month, particularly the international tourism destinations El Nido and the Calamianes Group of Islands. Electricity was only recently restored in the town of Coron, while the Culion Leper Sanitarium in another island suffered heavy structural damage from the supertyphoon.

The art exhibit “Alay Sa Kalikasan” showcasing tarpaulin-reproduced mixed media works of Palawan based Collective Artists for the Environment (CAFE) opened at Robinsons Place Palawan on December 1 and runs till Friday, December 6.

The exhibit is aimed at supporting public awareness for prevention of global climate change through environmental conservation and promotion of renewable green energy sources for sustainable development.

Carbon is scheduled to visit the southern town of Aborlan (63 km south of Puerto Princesa), proposed site of a controversial coal-fired power plant, before the  concert at 7 p.m. Friday.

CAFE has been active in espousing public awareness about environmental issues in Palawan through collaborative art efforts for the past decade.

CAFE’s previous issue-themed exhibits are the following:

2003 - “Red Seas” - Palawan Museum - Theme: Illegal poaching and killing of sea turtles by Chinese fishermen in Tubbataha Reefs National Marine Park.

2005 - “Hiyaw sa Balabac” - Palawan Museum + Batasang Pambansa + UP Diliman & Conspiracy Bar - Theme: Indigenous peoples claim to ancestral domain and right to traditional livelihood.

2011 - “TREEbute” - Palawan Museum - Theme: A tribute to environmentalist and local art patron Gerardo Ortega.

“Alay Sa Kalikasan” is open during mall hours until Friday, December 6.
