MANILA, Philippines - 2013 is set to be an incredible year for this fantastic new British artist, with an array of pollsters tipping him for greatness.
Tom Odell, a British singer-songwriter having written his own material since the age of 13, now 22, Tom has built up a sizeable fanbase with support from the public and critics alike. Tom moved to Brighton to immerse himself in a burgeoning music scene. Signed by Lily Rose Cooper to her label In The Name Of (ITNO), he released his debut extended play ‘Songs From Another Love’ to much acclaim in October 2012 following the release with a performance on Later... with Jools Holland.
On the back of Tom’s amazing Jools Holland performance of his hugely acclaimed track “Another Love," radio stations in Britain were impressed. The track has been made record of the week on radio and has led to ‘Another Love’ peaking at #12 on the local airplay chart. A whirlwind of nominations, including the BBC Sound of 2013 Poll and MTV Brand New for 2013 shortlists, spawned comparisons by critics to the likes of Jeff Buckley and early Bowie. Tom’s combined love of film and literature (which range through classics like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Kerouac to Woody Allen and Wes Anderson) also influenced his debut album.
On winning the prestigious BRITs Critics’ Choice Award, Tom followed the footsteps of past recipients including Adele (2008), Florence and the Machine (2009), Ellie Goulding (2010), Jessie J (2011) and Emilie Sande (2012). The Critics' Choice Award is for new British acts tipped by critics for mainstream success in the forthcoming year.
“I’m thrilled and honoured of winning the BRITs Critics’ Choice Award. I genuinely can’t believe it. Thank you so much. Looking at the list of amazing female artists who have won the Award already, I just hope I don’t let the boys down!" Tom said.
“I hope the album feels human and real and that there are some flaws – because the flaws help make it what it is. Really, I’d love to live in a time when music felt uncontrived and imperfect and gave people a real sense of elevation. When it’s sad I want it to be REALLY sad. When it’s happy I want it to feel euphoric…I suppose I want the record to express the heightened feelings and emotions we all get in our livesâ€, said Tom.
