'Beetlejuice' sequel drops trailer with Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder returning
MANILA, Philippines — Warner Bros. released the first teaser trailer for Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" with Michael Keaton back as the titular bio-exorcist after 36 years.
The teaser begins with newcomer Jenna Ortega of "Scream" and "Wednesday" fame cycling through Winter River, Connecticut as a choral version of "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)" plays.
Among the places Jenna's Astrid Deetz cycles past are Miss Shannon's School for Girls and the iconic red bridge from the original film that Barbara and Adam Maitland (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) crashed into.
"Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)" is actually being sung by kids at a funeral attended by Astrid, her mother Lydia (Winona Ryder back in the role), and her grandmother Delia (Catherine O'Hara also returning).
As the song continues, Astrid ventures into the Deetz's attic where she uncovers the miniature model of Winter River.
The teaser cuts to Lydia entering the attic as the replica trembles in the dark and a foggy chasm runs through it because a portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened.
Slowly, the figure of Beetlejuice rises to face Lydia, "The Juice is loose," and cuts to a shocked Lydia and the title card.
Also starring in "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" directed by Burton on a screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith and "Wednesday" screenwriters Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, Burn Gorman, and Monica Bellucci as Beetlejuice's wife.
"Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" premieres in Philippine cinemas on September 4. — Video from Warner Bros. Philippines' YouTube channel
