Why ‘Mutya ng Section E’ is also a hitmaker

Sad news for fans of Amiel Sol. His No. 1 hit Sa Bawat Sandali has been dethroned. An upbeat, soulful song about the early stages of falling in love has taken over the No. 1 slot in the Spotify chart.

This is Tibok, a song by Earl Agustin which simmered below the hit list for over two years but was recently discovered by listeners and is now No. 1. Earl was once known as an Arthur Nery wannabe. Like Arthur, he comes from Mindanao. There have even been times in the past when he subbed for Arthur when Janine Tenoso needed a singing partner for the duet Pelikula. Gigs like that are now in the past as the 23-year-old singer-songwriter has now come into his own, thanks to Tibok.

Coincidentally, both Sa Bawat Sandali and Tibok are part of the soundtrack of the blockbuster web series “Mutya ng Section E.” Truth to tell, it now seems that viewers of the show are helping drive these songs to the top. Vice-versa, those who love the songs have also taken to watching “Mutya” and are driving the ratings up, up, up and up.

Now airing via Viva One, “Mutya ng Section E” is based on the Wattpad book written by Lara Flores or as she likes to be called, Eatmore2behappy. It tells the story of a girl who transfers to a ritzy, pricey high school. For lack of available space, she is assigned to Section E, the lowest rung in the academic staircase where she is the sole female student.

All of her male classmates are unruly, lazy and not about to allow a girl from nowhere to invade their space. But they would soon find out that Jay-Jay is no ordinary girl.

“Mutya ng Section E” features a line-up of new and exciting talents who have also become huge fan favorites. Foremost among these is the “mutya” of the story, the pretty singer-actress Ashtine Olviga. As Jay-Jay, she is an angle in a budding love triangle that also includes Kiefer and Yuri Hanamichu, played by Andres Muhlach and Rabin Angeles, respectively. It is the theme songs of these two young romances that have become the biggest selling songs of the moment. Sa Bawat Sandali for Jay-Jay and Keifer and Tibok for Jay-Jay and Yuri.

By the way, bookending every episode is another tune simmering just below the top hits. It is Daleng-Daleng by MMJ, an oldie that, thanks to “Mutya,” is now a goodie.
