MANILA, Philippines — Yul Servo first became known as an actor, but he is rarely seen acting now on TV and movies, save for his guest appearance in 2023’s “Black Rider.”

Servo is currently the vice mayor of Manila, and it is the reason why he is not as visible on TV as an actor as much as he would want to be.

“Sa ngayon naman, okay naman sa akin. Kaso kumporme sa schedule e. Ayoko kasing umabsent sa city hall e, sa trabaho,” Servo told Philstar.com in an exclusive interview in Manila Hotel.

The actor-politician sat with Philstar.com right after the launch of his sixth solo exhibit at the hotel’s Art Gallery, where his latest wall-mounted metal art and free-standing sculptures are on view featuring Chinese temples and the streets of Manila.

“Actually, gustong-gusto ko sa showbiz. Gustong-gusto kong umarte. Ang problema lang kasi pagka sa showbiz, merong schedule silang sinusunod e,” Servo said.

For him, it was important to attend to his duties as the city’s public official. He said that he does not miss any of his sessions, which are scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday.

This was the very reason why he cannot commit to making a showbiz comeback. In the case of his “Black Rider” guest role, he was able to do it since they were in recess, or vacation.

“‘Yun ‘yung responsibilidad na inatang sa akin ng majority ng Manileno. Siyempre ayokong sayangin ‘yun kasi hindi lahat nabibigyan ng pagkakataon na maglingkod sa bayan. Kaya pinipilit kong laging mag-session, laging umattend,” he said.

Servo also revealed that like many of his fellow actors, he also wants to be a director. He was influenced because he saw how filmmaking is done through his years acting in front of the camera and through the directors he worked with.

There is also another reason why he wants to stand behind the camera in the coming years.

“Ang pelikula kasi kaluluwa ng bayan natin ‘yan e. Parang mata natin ‘yan e. Kung ano ‘yung loob natin. Pwede ding magbago ng disiplina…

“Siyempre gusto ko ‘yung about Filipino, ‘yung kultura katulad sa panahon natin. Nakakalungkot man, ‘yung po at opo, ‘yung paggalang at respeto. ‘Yung good moral, ‘yung mga bayani natin,” he said.
