MANILA, Philippines — On Jan. 31, the Newport Performing Arts Theater will come alive with the music of one of the most celebrated figures in Original Pilipino Music (OPM) — Vehnee Saturno.
Known as a prolific songwriter and record producer, Vehnee’s enduring legacy has shaped the Filipino music industry for decades, producing countless songs that have touched the hearts of millions.
Born in Iloilo City on April 1, 1954, Vehnee’s humble beginnings were instrumental in fueling his passion for storytelling through music. Growing up in poverty as the son of a carpenter and a housewife, he dreamed of becoming a journalist but had to forgo his studies due to financial constraints. Despite life’s challenges, he persevered — training with the Philippine Air Force after high school and taking on odd jobs, including working as a photocopy machine operator.
It was this resilience that laid the foundation for his extraordinary career, crafting hits that have stood the test of time. His musical genius has given us songs like Be My Lady (Martin Nievera), Mr. Kupido (Rachel Alejandro), How Could You Say You Love Me (Sarah Geronimo), Bakit Pa Ba (JayR), Bakit Pa (Jessa Zaragoza), Till My Heartaches End (Ella Mae Saison), Wala Na Bang Pag-ibig (Jaya), Isang Lahi (Regine Velasquez), Sana Kahit Minsan (Ariel Rivera) and Ikaw Na (Willie Revillame) — a repertoire that reads like a greatest hits collection of OPM.
Line-produced by Star Media Entertainment, this long-overdue concert aptly titled “The Music of Vehnee Saturno” will feature a powerhouse lineup of Filipino artists who have brought the songwriter’s masterpieces to life. Expect performances by Ice Seguerra, Joey Generoso, Jessa Zaragoza, Julie Anne San Jose, Kyla, Dingdong Avanzado, Noel Cabangon, Rita Daniela, Daryl Ong, Kris Lawrence and Martin Nievera.
Adding a personal touch to the evening, Vehnee’s longtime collaborator and musical director, Homer Flores, will share the stage. Together, they’ll recount untold stories of Vehnee’s music journey — revealing how some of his iconic songs were born from accidental or unintentional moments that turned into massive hits.
