MANILA, Philippines — "Wicked" is now the highest-grossing film adaptation of a stage musical after reaching $634 million (P36.66 billion) at the global box office.
The title was previously held by 2008's "Mamma Mia" which earned $611.5 million (P35.36 billion) by the end of its theatrical run.

That movie's sequel did pretty well too when it came a decade later, earning $395.6 million (P22.87 billion), a positive outlook for "Wicked: For Good" which comes out next year.
Joining "Wicked" and "Mamma Mia" in the Top 5 highest-grossing film adaptations of a stage musical are 2012's "Les Miserables," the 1978 classic "Grease," and the last musical to win the Oscar for Best Picture "Chicago."
It should be noted that, if adjusted for inflation, the record would go to 1965's "The Sound of Music" — another Best Picture winner — as its gross in today's figures would be well over a billion dollars.
"Wicked" may find new life yet again in the Philippines as a sing-along version will arrive in cinemas next year after the conclusion of the Metro Manila Film Festival.
