Andrea and Elisha slowly make their mark in the music industry

Andrea Gutierrez and Elisha Ponti were the finale performers in the star-studded seventh Eddys Awards held last July 7 at the Marriott Grand Ballroom. So impressed was I when they sang their medley of Lambing, Naghihintay, and Ikaw ay Ako that I made a mental note to meet them and get to know more about them ASAP. (I also found out later that the show’s director, Eric Quizon, was equally impressed by the duo’s vocal prowess.)

Here then is the realization of my note to self, an interview with aspiring singers Andrea and Elisha. Keep your eyes on these two lovely and undeniably talented ladies who are slowly making their mark in the crazy competitive music industry.

When did you discover that you wanted to become a singer?

Andrea: When I was little, five or six years old, I used to ask for toy microphones and CDs from my parents so that I could sing their favorite songs. I was always a shy kid. But when I got to senior high school in St. Paul Makati, I slowly came out of my shell and enjoyed singing.

Elisha: I was around 13 years old when I realized that I wanted to do something more and share something amazing in the music industry. It was a moment of clarity and passion that set me on this path.

Tell us about your journeys as singers.

Andrea: When I was in senior high school, I started participating in singing contests in school. I was always among the Top Three winners in every contest that I participated in. That is when I started being recognized and asked to perform in my school’s events. I started pursuing a singing career in 2019 when I entered college at Centro Escolar University (CEU). Then the pandemic happened. But luckily, I won the grand prize in Asia’s Best Singing Competition 2021 Season 3, and the opportunities started pouring in. I was asked to audition in TV shows and was able to perform with renowned artists like Marco Sison, Rey Valera, Ms. Dulce, and David Pomeranz. And now I was able to release my first original song, Naghihintay. I am also hoping to record very soon the two songs Mr. Rey Valera promised to compose for me.

Elisha: My journey as a singer has been challenging but rewarding. In the beginning, my biggest enemy was myself, since I was filled with doubts about my abilities and was uncertain about the future. However, with the support and love of many people, I managed to stay on track. Their encouragement helped me improve, look on the bright side of things, and trust in what life has in store for me.

How does your family feel about it? Are they supportive?

Andrea: They are very supportive to the point that they are present in every concert where I perform. I remember the time when it rained so hard, but they still came even if they came from different cities. They never fail to show their support in everything that I do. I am an only child and my dad passed away a few years ago, so it’s really just me and my mom. My mom is my biggest supporter.

Elisha: Yes, my family is very happy and supportive. Initially, they were worried because I was a very shy kid. But as time passed, they saw how I grew as a performer, singer and artist. Their support has been unwavering and essential in my journey.

Who is/are your idol/s and why?

Andrea: The ones that I really look up to in the singing industry are Ms. Regine Velasquez and Ms. Sarah Geronimo. Back when I was a little kid, my mom and grandmother used to have these karaoke CDs that we played in the afternoons. That was when I was first exposed to the music they sang, and those songs stuck with me.

Elisha: Locally, I admire Juris and Kyla for their unique singing styles and how they add such dynamic. They bring something special to each performance. Internationally, I look up to Camila Cabello and Sabrina Carpenter. They inspire me with their technical skills, stage presence and personalities.

How do you balance your singing career and your studies?

Andrea: I graduated from CEU with a degree in Pharmacy and I am preparing to take the board exam, so I can be a registered pharmacist. This is a promise I made to my mom. I am hopeful I can juggle both, but if I had to choose, I’d like to be a singer.

Elisha: Balancing my singing career and studies is all about time management. I don’t force myself into tight schedules that I can’t fully commit to. Instead, I go with the flow and ensure I have enough time for my passions and my education.

Your tips for aspiring singers?

Andrea: Do what you’ve always wanted to do and don’t give up, whatever ups and downs life may bring. Always remember that there are lots of people who you don’t know but support you; and as long as you’re happy and you’re not hurting anybody, keep going.

Elisha: Never give up. If something doesn’t work out, another opportunity will come. Always stay humble and grounded, trust in God’s plan, support other aspiring singers and enjoy the journey because life is short, so make the most of every moment.
