Disney orders 'Wizards of Waverly Place' sequel show
MANILA, Philippines — Disney has ordered the creation of a pilot episode for a sequel show to "Wizards of Waverly Place," with former stars Selena Gomez and David Henrie slated to return.
Both actors will reprise their roles from the original series alongside executive producing duties. Henrie's Justin Russo is eyed as the main character while Gomez as Alex Russo will be in a guest star capacity.
The show will follow Justin who has opted for a normal life with his family and left his wizard powers behind, similar to what David DeLuise's Jerry Russo did in the original show when he married his wife Theresa (Maria Canals-Barrera).
A powerful young wizard, however, appears in need of training, leading Justin to "embrace his past to ensure the future of the Wizard World."
Janice LeAnn Brown, Alkaio Thiele and Mimi Gianopulos will also star in the sequel series.
Serving as executive producers with Henrie and Gomez are Gary Marsh, Andy Fickman, Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas.
Fickman will direct the pilot while writers Elinoff and Thomas previously co-created "Raven’s Home," the sequel show to "That's So Raven."
Henrie reposted a network draft of the pilot script on his social media from Disney channel, saying in the caption, "Get ready for the Russos to become a part of your family once again, but we’ve grown! 2024, the year [magic] comes back."
DeLuise commented "Reboot?" on Henrie's Instagram, which prompted fans to ask if only Henrie and Gomez were returning. Henrie replied that they "definitely plan on bringing back the original cast for the series order."
"Wizards of Waverly Place" ran for four seasons on Disney channel from 2007 to 2012 and helped launched Gomez's career.
