MANILA, Philippines — Christmas is a few days early for fans of the cult favorite '90s anime "Ghost Fighter" as its live-action adaptation produced by Netflix will premiere in December.

Netflix has set the release date for "Yu Yu Hakusho," or also known as "Ghost Fighter," on December 14.

The live adaptation takes on the story that was originally written as a manga by Yoshihiro Togashi. It was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump for four years from 1990.

In the 1990s, its anime was broadcast several times, including its run on GMA-7.

It tells the story of a teenage boy named Yusuke Urameshi (Eugene in Philippine-dubbed anime) who finds himself in the spirit world after figuring in an accident. He takes on a deal as a spirit detective that would give him a chance to return to the land of the living.

In his adventure in the spirit world, he meets three other characters who will join him in his quest: Kurama (Dennis), the redhead who has a fondness for roses and who actually lives a dual life; Kazuma Kuwabara (Alfred), a human who also goes to Yusuke's school and who has unbelievable physical strength; and Hiei (Vincent), an aloof and mysterious personality who initially goes against the three other main protagonists.

Netflix said it took the production five years to create the live-action adaptation. It tapped the global one-team production strategy that spanned both Japan and the United States, the same approach in their most recent, successful live-action adaptation "One Piece."

"Yu Yu Hakusho" is directed by Sho Tsukikawa, with screenplay by Tatsuro Mishima. The cast includes Takumi Kitamura, Jun Shison, Kanata Hongo and Shuhei Uesugi. It premieres on Netflix on December 14.
