Rising K-pop group TAN aims to make a name in Phl, overseas
South Korean boy band TAN (short for To All Nations) just finished a 10-day promotional tour in the country. But before heading to their next destination to continue introducing their brand of K-pop music, they met the local press to talk about their best memories about the Philippines.
TAN is comprised of Changsun, Taehoon, Jiseong, Sunghyuk, Jaejun, Hyunyeop and Jooan.
It has just been 10 months since their last stopover in the Philippines. During their recent visit, they sure had a great time doing TV guestings and mall shows, and interacting with their fans called Filo SODAs.
“Actually, since our debut, we haven’t had a rest (break). We also had busy schedules,” said Changsun through an English translator in a media conference for their live shows here, which were presented by Universal Records Philippines, SBTown and Think Entertainment. “As long as there are fans waiting for us, we are going to those places and of course, we are promising to be back again here in the Philippines. We will try our best to come back as early as possible.”
Jaejun, for his part, said that the second visit felt like he was “back home.” “And of course, a lot of Filipino fans are welcoming us so much so I feel very grateful for that. Salamat po.”
Hyunyeop, on the other, recalled having a foot injury the last time he was here. “I wasn’t able to join the group with their dance performances. For the past 10 months, I actually did a lot of effort to recover well and wait for this day to come back here in the Philippines.
“So I felt kind of bad that I wasn’t able to show my best performances during the first visit and now that we are back, I promise to give my all during our performances. And we are actually happy to be seeing again TAN forming seven numbers on the stage again.”
The group considered the Philippines as “one of the important nations when it comes to K-pop” and they want to “lift their name here in the Philippines and go to other nations as well.”
Jaejun expressed his desire to collaborate with any Filipino artist or group while Sunghyuk shared he wants to visit any gym in the Philippines as he always does whenever he goes to other countries.
The Filipino dishes that they have tried in the past and want to try again are crispy pata, halo-halo, sinigang and Jollibee menu items.
The Tagalog phrases that they have learned so far are, “Bakit malungkot ang beshie ko?” for Taehoon, “Crush mo ba ako?” for Changsun, “Pwede ba akin ka na lang?” for Hyunyeop, and “Ako pogi” for Jiseong.
The seven-member group just dropped their album, TAN MADE [I], with Heartbeat as the lead single. It is about self-love and self-confidence.
Jooan said they personally composed and wrote all the lyrics for their seven-track album. “For the message of this album, we want to (convey) self-confidence in loving ourselves as well. We all participated in the creative process for this album. We really gave our best effort for this and we hope that you will enjoy the songs in this new album.”
Jaejun added, “In the seven songs that we have in that album, we talk about (self-belief) and self-confidence in any situation, especially in our times nowadays. I think that everybody needs to have self-confidence.
“And maybe most of the listeners might connect with the idea of receiving love or having self-love as well. We made the songs in this album (in such a way that) every listener can actually relate to our songs and also have self-confidence by just hearing our songs. I think you actually will have fun listening to those seven songs in our album. Thank you po.”
On what makes them different from other K-pop groups, Jaejun explained, “I think there are a lot of idol groups who participate in writing the lyrics of their songs. But I think that there are not much idol groups who actually produce their songs or produce their albums. So for me, I think that TAN is one of those groups who can actually produce their own songs or their own albums.”
Changsun chimed in, “As you guys all know, we are from a survival group. It’s not just any simple, any survival audition program, but it also tested our mental ability and physical abilities as well.
“And literally, we are the seven persons who survived that audition program so I think that all seven members have a very strong mindset and physical abilities as well.”
TAN was formed through the MBC survival competition show Extreme Debut: Wild Idol. They debuted in March 2022 with the EP 1TAN.
