Bong and Lani share secret to 37 years of Marriage
MANILA, Philippines — Thirty-seven years of togetherness as a married couple is not totally perfect for Sen. Bong Revilla Jr. and his congressman-wife Lani Mercado.
The showbiz-turned-politico couple had their misunderstandings and worse fights. It even came to a point where Lani was ready to leave their house and really give up. However, they ironed out their differences and are now living a peaceful married life.
“We didn’t leave each other,” Lani said. “Even in the lowest times of his life, you don’t leave your partner. We were there for each other through thick and thin. I guess, that’s our secret all these years.”
Their civil wedding was held in Glendale, California on May 28, 1986. Their eldest, Bryan, was born in November that same year. Twelve years after, on March 25, 1998, they had their church wedding. They celebrated the 25th anniversary of their church nuptials last month.
Lani is set to celebrate her 55th birthday on April 13. There will be a free concert at Nomo Parking Lot in Bacoor, Cavite with December Avenue, Sunkist Lola, Ate Gay and other surprise artists.
“We are giving away prizes, 55 of each — wheelchairs, hair makeovers, dentures, P2,000 cash, outdoor and indoor selfies, best smile,” Lani announced. “I just want thanksgiving for my birthday.
“Of course, I just pray good health for my whole family, especially Sen. Bong and for me because we are not getting any younger.”
Bong is excited that he will return to TV in the new weekly action-comedy-romance, Walang Matigas na Pulis sa Magaling na Misis, to start taping this April and will air in June on Sunday primetime on GMA 7. At the helm are directors Enzo Williams and Frasco Mortiz.
The soundtrack of the same title was recently uploaded on TikTok. It was taken from the original track, Magandang Babae sa Pilipinas.
Last week of March, Bong underwent laparoscopy to remove stones from his gallbladder. His gallbladder was also removed since it was already infected.
“I was about to fall asleep, but I couldn’t,” Bong recalled. “I kept tossing and turning because of the pain. Then, I had to wake up Lani. She saw me stand up. She asked, ‘Where will you go?’ I told her I need to go to the hospital because I couldn’t bear the pain anymore. She took me to the hospital at 5 in the morning.”
The laparoscopy went well and Bong had to stay in the hospital for three days. When he checked out, he was advised not to do any strenuous activity for three weeks. Even his diet also consisted of only light meals, mostly greens, although there is nothing prohibited. He will start working out again in two weeks.
“At least I’m alive,” Bong beamed. “Healing for laparoscopy is fast now. “It was not like before when to take away your gallbladder. And it would take two to three months of healing for the patient.”
Early last year, Bong also had shock wave for his urether. Back in the ‘80s, he also had an appendectomy.
“Never say surrender,” Bong declared. “Laban hangga’t buhay tayo.”
The Revilla family will spend their Holy Week break in Palawan.
