Various female international artists from Asia, Europe and the United States will come together today at the Pasir Panjang Power Station in Singapore to grace the second edition of The Alex Blake Charlie Sessions, a women-fronted music festival organized by 24OWLS.
One of the performers is Filipino-American TikTok star and member of the vocal collective EARCANDY, Lyn Lapid. The 20-year-old is the artist behind Producer Man which was her debut single. She dropped her debut EP, The Outsider, last year under Republic Records with tracks I Guess That Was Goodbye, The Outsider, In My Mind and Pager.
As per press notes, Lyn is a first-generation American born to Filipino immigrant parents. She spent her childhood in Maryland where she got introduced to classical music.
“When you hear my music, I want you to say, ‘Oh, that’s a Lyn song,’” she said in a statement. “It would be amazing if people think, ‘She gives me Lyn Lapid vibes.’”
Vietnamese-American R&B singer-songwriter Thuy (stylized as thuy) will share the stage with Lyn. She drew her inspiration from early 2000s pop and R&B artists such as Britney Spears, Brandy and Mariah Carey. She was named among People Magazine’s #1 Emerging Artists to Watch in 2022.
The first record Hands on Me earned thuy a KMEL 106.1’s Home Turf award, which led to her breakthrough in the pop-R&B music scene. In 2021, she released her debut EP, i hope u see this, and she is gearing up for her second EP coming out soon.
She “hopes that my music continues to inspire confidence in others and to be a voice for those who want to feel seen.”
Singapore-bred alt-rock trio Coming Up Roses, composed of vocalist-bassist Emily Sera and guitarists Darius Oon and Lorenzo Romero, will also headline the music festival. The band was formed in 2018 and has participated in other international festivals such as LUCfest, Fred Perry Subculture and Canadian Music Week. The group is now based in London.
In 2019, Coming Up Roses issued their debut EP, Waters, and released a vinyl of the same title in 2021. Just last year, they launched their sophomore EP Everything Is.
Other international music acts that will give life to the concert are Deb Never, Didi Han, Ichiko Aoba, Kindergarchy and Luna Li.
Seattle native Deb Never will fire up the festival’s mood with her “grunge and hip-hop sounds, lo-fi guitars, 808 beats and melancholic lyrics.” Her debut single Ugly was produced by Dylan Brady? ?via ?The FADER. She released her debut EP House on Wheels in 2019 and she got recognized as one of Pigeons & Planes?‘ Best New Artists of the Month? back in 2019.
Paris-based DJ Didi Han will keep the party going with her “genre-defying sets” of house music. The Korean-born artist dropped her single Forest in 2019 and released her five-track EP Wake Up under French label Roche Musique in 2021.
Japanese singer-songwriter Ichiko was earlier cited by online music publication Pitchfork for her “breathy vocals and placid guitar playing.” Her albums include Kamisori Otome (Razor Girl) in 2010, 0 in 2013 and qp in 2018.
Singapore-based Indonesian artist Amanda Rizkita (also known as Kindergarchy) will also join the line-up. Her mixes and sets are “often tinged with lush and atmospheric sounds, a sense of play, a lot of curiosity, and sometimes a quiet tension bubbling underneath.”
Meanwhile, Korean-Canadian music artist Luna Li also brings her brand of music, described as a “blend of indie rock and psych where experimental neoclassical morphs into pristine pop,” at The Alex Blake Charlie Sessions. Her tracks were churned out from the “perspective of the female gaze,” according to the press notes.
Rounding up the list of female performers who will rock the stage are: Nicolette, Nusha, rEmPiT gOdDe$$ and Soccer Mommy.
Singaporean Nicolette plays diverse music genres from “Balearic beat, disco, house to obscure Asian funk and pop.” Aside from being a DJ, she is also a fashion designer at The Salvages. She has played for Tom Sachs at Bangkok Biennale, Soho House x Singapore Biennale and currently holds a bimonthly night at Phuture Zouk with Jeremy Boon.
Romanian DJ and producer Nusha has been in the techno scene since 2007. She has been hailed for her “bright, electrifying and danceable shows.”
Kuala Lumpur-Singapore based artist rEmPiT gOdDe$$ (Victoria Yam) is a music producer, composer and DJ who is into the industrial club genre. At present, she is the music editor of an independent publication Magazine For Young Girls.
American indie-rock musician Soccer Mommy, real name Sophie Allison, has previously released three studio albums, Clean (2018), Color Theory (2020) and the more recent Sometimes, Forever (2022).
Prior to today’s concert, 24OWLS launched several activities as part of The Alex Blake Charlie Sessions 2023.
“The Alex Blake Charlie Sessions goes beyond music. It’s a day of great food, hangout spaces, art discovery or simply, making precious memories with friends,” the event organizers said.
“It doesn’t matter what generation you’re from or what kind of music you favor — you could be one of Soccer Mommy’s one million devotees, a part of the local rave party community or just an appreciative fan of folk singer Ichiko Aoba — there’ll be something for you,” they added.
