Angela Bassett beats Dolly de Leon for Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe

MANILA, Philippines — Angela Bassett won the 2023 Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, beating an impressive line-up that included Filipina actress Dolly de Leon.

Bassett beat out De Leon who starred in Palme d'Or 2022 winner "Triangle of Sadness," Kerry Condon from "The Banshees of Inisherin," Jamie Lee Curtis from "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and Carey Mulligan from "She Said" for the Supporting Actress plum.

The 64-year-old actress wins her second Golden Globe, having won Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy in 1994 for "What's Love Got To Do With It," for her role as Queen Ramonda in Marvel's "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever."

She was the first actress to receive a Golden Globe nomination for starring in a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, and is now is also the first actor to win.

The only other nomination for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" is for Best Original Song with "Lift Me Up" sung by Rihanna in the end credits.

In her acceptance speech after recounting her previous Globes win, Bassett paraphrased a quote by the late author Toni Morrison about life already being a miracle of chance waiting for its destiny to be shaped.

"But in order for that destiny to manifest, I think that it requires courage, to have faith, it requires patience... a true sense of yourself," Bassett continued. "It's not easy because the past is circuitous and it has many unexpected detours, but by the grace of God, I stand here grateful."

She then thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press who handles the Globes, her team and family, and her colleagues at Marvel and Disney as she touched on how they dedicated their film to the late Chadwick Boseman.

"We embarked on this journey together with love — we mourned, loved, and healed — and we were surrounded by the light and spirit of Chadwick, and we have joy in knowing that... it is a part of his legacy that he helped to lead us to," Bassett said.

"Triangle of Sadness" was also up for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy with "Everything Everywhere All At Once," "Babylon," and "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" but they all lost to "The Banshees of Inisherin."

Prior to De Leon's historic nomination, Filipino-American Darren Criss previously won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series in 2019 after his heavily-lauded role of Andrew Cunanan in "American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace."

Other individuals with Philippine heritage that have received Golden Globe nominations include H.E.R., Robert Lopez and Hailee Steinfeld — the former two have Oscars to their names, but no full-blooded Filipino has yet to win an Academy Award.
