Kelvin Miranda hopes to essay more diverse roles
Kelvin, star of the GMA Afternoon Prime series, Unica Hija, aspires to become a versatile actor. That’s why in the new year and the years to come, he would like to portray different roles and be in different stories. All this will provide him creative experiences that enrich himself and his craft.

2022 was a fruitful year for Kelvin Miranda, acting- and music-wise. He starred in the second installment of Mano Po Legacy titled Her Big Boss, with Bianca Umali and Ken Chan, on GMA 7, and the family sitcom Tols, with Abdul Raman and Shaun Salvador on GTV.

Kelvin also took a breather from TV acting by releasing the revival single Gusto Kita with Ally Gonzales and the original song Sumayaw. His work in the still-airing afternoon drama series Unica Hija started in November of the year that was. In the new year, Kelvin’s character Ralph continues to be a friend and hero to Hope, played by Kate Valdez.

In a virtual one-on-one with The STAR, Kelvin looked back on, did count his blessings and shared his thoughts about his and Kate’s sci-fi, family drama.

“I’m very happy with people’s reception of Unica Hija,” said Kelvin of the show’s good ratings. “I’m grateful to those who have supported the show from the start. I’m also very happy for Kate. As her onscreen partner, I know how she gave her heart to it.” The Sparkle GMA Artist Center actress took up the challenge to play the human being Bianca early in the story and portray the human clone Hope eventually after the exposition part.

“Actually, that’s the peg (inspiration) for Ralph,” clarified Kelvin about his character’s brave and gentleman nature, also known to others as knight in shining armor. “He is like the bida-bidang binatilyo (a heroic young man), parang lahat kayang gawin pero meron pa rin namang butas para magkaroon ng mga mistakes sa mga decisions atsaka sa choice na pinipili niya (he seems that he can do everything but he still makes mistakes when it comes to making decisions and choices).”

Given Hope’s intriguing life, Kelvin shared this piece of information about Ralph, “Talagang napamahal siya kay Hope (He has fallen in love with her),” and, at some point of the narrative, has appreciated the humanity in her. He added that the story’s charm also lies in its braveness to tackle human cloning as a concept and present such possibility in the future. This is a reason why Kapuso viewers find time and include Unica Hija in their afternoon entertainment viewing habit. Projects like this are valuable for the young actor, especially that Kelvin aspires to become a dependable one.

“I also want to portray different roles, to be in different stories and to get into different experiences (through the characters I play),” said he. “So, I can gain different (and more) insights (and learn from them)… I really want to become a versatile actor.” However, he also takes into account what his management team says about future roles. After all, it has also the wisdom to discern the entertainment path that will further his career. In fact, Kelvin has had a good run from the time he was paired up with Mikee Quintos in GTV’s The Lost Recipe in 2021, at the height of the pandemic.

“After (that), I was given another project, (Stories from the Heart:) Loving Miss Bridgette,” recalled Kelvin, who acted opposite Beauty Gonzalez. That was where he found his acting groove and foothold, which led him to new opportunities. “After that, dun talaga nag-hit, nag-boom, I got recognized and I was able to get another (set of) opportunities.” But The Lost Recipe started it all for him on TV and the chance to do a sitcom Tols came. Kelvin is among those artists, who have remained visible from the pandemic times to the new normal.

Aside from doing more projects this year, Kelvin said, “(I’m wishing for) of course, good health, lakas ng loob (courage). Actually, I’m looking forward to a lot of things na sana pumasok ng maganda, swabe at sana malinaw lahat ng bagay sa akin ngayon (I hope good things will come and happen smoothly and clearly). Kayanin ko kung anuman yung mga another pagsubok na darating (I also hope to handle challenges that come my way).”

Definitely, challenges come with any work territory, particularly in show business that welcomes new faces yearly and demands artists to be relevant. This is also true when projects appear overwhelming and they sometimes overlap.

“Every day is a chance to improve or invest in your craft,” said Kelvin. “Kailangan mo lang matutong harapin kung papaano mo i-ha-handle yung mga dumarating sa iyo (You should know how to face and handle things). When you find something tough, then acknowledge it. There’s knowledge you can gain from it, yun yung sinasabi kong investment, with your experience at the moment, you can use it in your next project… you can turn something negative (a challenging task) into a stepping stone for something positive.”

These personal and professional experiences of actors like Kelvin enrich and help them in their next acting project.

“Araw-araw, lahat ng na-e-experience ko, binabangko ko (sila) sa sarili ko, tinatandaan ko kung ano yung pwede kung matutunan (Every day, all my experiences, I put them in my memory bank and remember learnings I can get from them), so I’ll be ready for tomorrow,” said Kelvin of how he keeps himself on his toes when it comes to acting. “This is my passion and this is where I am happy.”

As of writing, Kelvin is also doing a drama romance film with Kira Balinger as leading lady and under Pocket Media Productions. The director is Cathy Camarillo. This is one of the acting projects his fans and the public can look forward to from Kelvin this year.
