Kanye West backs out of Coachella
MANILA, Philippines — Rapper Kanye West pulled out as one of the headliners of Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, a source confirmed to CNN.
West was reportedly supposed to perform on the closing night of the two-weekend festival, which will run on April 15 to 17 and April 22 to 24. He was scheduled to headline the fete along with artists Harry Styles and Billie Eilish.
The "Stronger" rapper had also earlier threatened to back out from Coachella after Eilish made a comment at a concert that he perceived to be criticizing Travis Scott, something Eilish denied.
Kanye, who now legally goes by Ye, is also making headlines for winning two Grammy awards despite not attending the music awards show last Sunday, Las Vegas time. He won the Best Melodic Rap Performance category, alongside The Weeknd and Lil Baby for their song “Hurricane.” He also took home the award for Best Rap Song for “Jail,” which he shared with Dwayne Abernathy Jr., Shawn Carter, Raul Cubina, Michael Dean, Charles M. Njapa, Sean Solymar, Mark Williams and Jay-Z.
The source reportedly told CNN that West did not want to perform at the Coachella stage amid his very public divorce battle with ex Kim Kardashian. In the past weeks, Ye had been very vocal about his grievances toward his former wife, her boyfriend Pete Davidson and their co-parenting disagreements. The social media attacks had even led to West's feud with "Daily Show" host Trevor Noah, and his 24-hour suspension from using Instagram. The source then claimed Ye is "going away to get help."
Coachella is one of the biggest music festivals in the world organized over two weekends at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California annually.
