MANILA, Philippines — In the year that was, showbiz couples made us believe in love, while others broke our hearts.

The pandemic did not stop these lovebirds from celebrating their love and exchanging “I do’s”. Here’s one quick last look at the list of showbiz couples who tied the knot in 2021.

Rocco Nacino and Melissa Gohing

Aboard the naval ship BRP Davao Del Sur Ld602 at Pier 13, actor Rocco and former De La Salle volleyball star Melissa exchanged marriage vows early January. It was in November 2020 when Rocco, also a Philippine Navy reservist officer, revealed his engagement to his longtime girlfriend.

Lovely Abella and Benj Manalo

Kapuso actress Lovely and actor Benj, son of comedian Jose Manalo, had their garden-themed wedding at Lemuria Gourmet Restaurant in Quezon City on Jan. 23. Lovely introduced her birth father, whom she thought was just her brother growing up, during the wedding proper.

Jessy Mendiola and Luis Manzano

Jessy and Luis “secretly wed” in an intimate civil ceremony at The Farm at San Benito in Batangas in February. They publicly announced their garden wedding in April.

Melissa Ricks and Michael Macatangay

Actress Melissa and her non-showbiz fiancé Michael married in a simple ceremony in a chapel in California, U.S.A. on May 23. It was attended by their closest friends and relatives. The two were engaged in August 2020.

Ara Mina and Dave Almariñez

Ara and her government official sweetheart got married at the Alphaland Baguio Mountain Lodges Chapel in Baguio City on June 30 after a five-month engagement.

Rachel Peters and Migz Villafuerte

After seven years of being together, ex-beauty queen Rachel and Camarines Sur Gov. Migz made it official via a small civil wedding ceremony held July 15 at the Supreme Court of the Philippines. They got engaged in 2019. Rachel gave birth to a baby girl last October.

Yam Concepcion and Miguel Cuunjieng

On July 24, Init sa Magdamag star Yam officially became Mrs. Cuunjieng. She shared a photo on Instagram of their yacht wedding in New York, U.S.A., attended by family and close friends. A month earlier, she surprised fans with the announcement that she was already engaged for two years to her non-showbiz partner.

Angel Locsin and Neil Arce

Two years after Neil proposed to Angel, they finally tied the knot in August in a simple and intimate civil wedding ceremony in white-and-black outfits.

JC de Vera and Rikkah Cruz

JC and Rikkah have been married since 2018 via civil wedding, before their daughter Lana was born. They held their church wedding in September 2021.

Mark Herras and Nicole Donesa

Mark and his fellow Kapuso talent Nicole decided to settle down in a civil wedding ceremony, presided by Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, last Sept. 8. They are expecting their first child together.

Kris Bernal and Perry Choi

After postponing their wedding thrice due to COVID-19, longtime couple Kris and non-showbiz beau Perry finally exchanged “I do’s” at the Magallanes Church in Makati City on Sept. 25.

Former love team partners (and now husband and wife), Carla and Tom held a church wedding on Oct. 23 after a year-long engagement. They have been a couple for seven years.

Many were caught by surprise by Ellen and Derek’s whirlwind romance that eventually led to marriage on 11:11 at a luxury villas and resort in Bataan. Early January of 2021, they were spotted getting cozy at a dinner party in Derek’s home. They confirmed their relationship in February and got engaged in March.

Dennis Trillo and Jennylyn Mercado

Kapuso stars Dennis and Jennylyn announced their engagement and baby news in late October. Few weeks later, they got hitched in a garden wedding ceremony. The lovely pair is expecting a baby girl.

Meanwhile, these showbiz sweethearts have gone public with their love affairs last year: Veteran actors Edu Manzano and Cherry Pie Picache; Bea Alonzo and Dominic Roque; and Maris Racal and Rico Blanco. Among these new couples, who do you think will take the plunge in 2022?

Now, if there were romances that got sealed in marriage in 2021, there were also showbiz couples who called it quits in to the shock, dismay and relief of fans.

We looked back on some of the local celebrity couples who rocked the online world (especially the prying eyes of “gossipy titas next door,” the Mariteses) with their controversial breakups. Here is the rundown:

In February, Kylie’s cryptic posts via her Instagram account sparked rumors of them falling out. Kylie’s father and veteran actor Robin Padilla confirmed the split in July. Kylie and Aljur were married in December 2018 and have two sons, Alas and Axl.

Kiko Estrada and Devon Seron

Actor Kiko announced in April that he was single, confirming his breakup with Devon. They had been together for two years. Actress Heaven Peralejo’s name surfaced amid the issue but she denied any involvement in the said breakup.

Jennica Garcia and Alwyn Uytingco

After seven years of marriage, Jennica declared her separation with husband Alwyn in May. They have two daughters, Athena Mori and Alessi. Not long ago, the husband and wife were hinting that they were working things out to possibly get back together.

Rabiya Mateo and Neil Salvacion

Miss Universe Philippines 2020 Rabiya’s longtime boyfriend and a frontliner, Neil, admitted in May that they parted ways. The latter auditioned for Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) Season 10, while the Ilongga beauty queen, who became a Kapuso artist in November, recently made showbiz buzz after her cozy photos with GMA-7 actor Jeric Gonzales in a Laguna theme park went viral.

Axel Torres and AJ Raval

Former PBB housemate Axel and sexy star AJ ended their relationship, reportedly in June. In October, AJ admitted Aljur was courting her after rumors of them dating surfaced following a viral Facebook post showing a topless photo of Aljur allegedly taken outside her room.

In an emotional interview with “King of Talk” Boy Abunda last September, LJ opened up about her split-up with partner for six years, Paolo. They have a two-year-old daughter named Summer. A photo of Paolo hanging out together in Baguio, and just recently in Boracay, with his A Faraway Land co-star Yen Santos made rounds online amid the breakup controversy.

Maggie Wilson and Victor Consunji

Former beauty queen Maggie divulged last September via Instagram her separation from husband, businessman Victor. They have been married for almost 11 years and have a son, Connor.

Kiko Estrada and Heaven Peralejo

Following Kiko’s controversial split with Devon, the former and Heaven declared their official relationship status in August. In October, Heaven validated the speculation of them detaching from each other after the two unfollowed their respective Instagram accounts.

Beatrice Luigi Gomez and Kate Jagdon

Weeks before the international beauty pageant competition, Philippine bet Bea’s partner of almost seven years, a disc jockey from Cebu, Kate, announced that they parted ways. The openly bisexual beauty queen made a Top 5 finish at the Miss Universe 2021 pageant in Israel.

Alodia Gosiengfiao and Wil Dasovich

Cosplay star Alodia disclosed in a Facebook post in November that she and boyfriend-vlogger Wil had put an end to their romance. “To those asking, wala na kame. It’s been a while. We tried to work things out many times but some things are not meant to be. I hope you respect our privacy during this time in our lives,” she said.

According to a PEP.ph report dated Nov. 15, Rayver and Janine had gone separate ways for a month already. The reason given for their breakup after four years of dating was lack of time for each other. To recall, Janine transferred to ABS-CBN in January 2021 after a decade with GMA, which continues to be Rayver’s home network.
