Two of the reigning sopranos of the ‘80s, Conching Rosal and Sylvia La Torre, teamed up on April 15, 1983 for a concert billed May Rosal at Torre.
It was a night of classical music…and more. More being kundiman, popular and even novelty songs. Although acclaimed classical singers, Conching and Sylvia never lost their mass appeal.
Conching appeared on radio and TV and even performed at the Manila Grand Opera House with pop singers and comedians. Sylvia hosted musical variety shows on radio-TV and appeared in comic roles on the big and small screen.
Supporting Rosal and Torre in the concert were Everlita Rivera (lyric soprano), Noel Samonte (baritone), Artie Perez de Tagle (tenor) and Himig Kayumanggi.
Musical director were Prof. Ernani Cuenco and Ed Borbon. Produced by Luis Pimentel in cooperation with Philippine American Life Insurance Co. Venue was Philamlife Auditorium along UN Avenue, Manila. — RKC
