December Avenue tops list of most streamed artists
Filipino pop music received its biggest boost in the area of music streaming last year. A Filipino band, December Avenue, topped Spotify’s most streamed tracks hit list for 2019. I believe that this also means that despite some rough spots that affected the local music industry these past few years, we Pinoys are now so used to streaming we can make original Filipino music a big seller.
The streaming platform announced that officially December Avenue was last year’s Most Streamed Artist, Most Streamed Local Artist, Most Streamed Group and that its song Kung Di Rin Lang Ikaw, a collaboration with Moira dela Torre, was the Most Streamed Track of the year. And that means defeating foreign big names like Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran in some instances.
The mellow lovelorn sound of the local band truly went big with Pinoys last year. This reminds me of the jukebox love songs trend from many years ago when lovelorn singers sang their guts out with ballads about unrequited love. The sentiments remain the same but we now do it in softer tones.
I guess it can also be said that it was December Avenue who set the trend for soft hugot tunes and propelled similar sounding acts to the top like This Band and I Belong to the Zoo. Also big in Spotify’s yearender hit list is the folksy emo band, Ben&Ben.
