‘Darna’ auditions opened to the public
MANILA, Philippines — ABS-CBN’s movie production company Star Cinema has opened the audition for the next superhero Darna to the public.
In its social media accounts, Star Cinema posted a video calling interested applicants for audition on May 4 and 5 at 10 a.m. at the ABS-CBN Audience Entrance in Quezon City.
“WHO IS THE NEXT DARNA? The search is ON!” Star Cinema captioned the video posted on their social media accounts.
Star Cinema, in collaboration with Star Magic and Star Hunt, are looking for females aged 20 to 26 years old, at least 5'5” in height, fluent in Tagalog, physically fit and with acting experience.
In an interview with TV Patrol, Star Cinema managing director Olivia Lamasan claimed that former beauty queens, athletes, and Star Magic talents have so far auditioned for the role.
She said that while the movie’s director, Jerrold Tarog, already has a short list of candidates, but they want to keep their options open for “undiscovered talents in every corner of Philippines.”
The comeback movie of the legendary super heroine created by Mars Ravelo has started its planning stage as early as 2015. Kapamilya actress Angel Locsin was offered to suit up the iconic costume once again, but she refused because of her back injury.
Kapamilya actress Liza Soberano accepted the role, but announced recently that she backed out because of a finger injury she suffered during the shooting of her then teleserye “Bagani.”
Likewise, Erik Matti resigned as the movie’s director because “things didn’t work out ideally” for him and Star Cinema. “Heneral Luna” and “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral” director Jerrold Tarog took over the directing chores since.
Although Matti’s choice to replace Soberano as Darna is Nadine Lustre, he said in a recent Twitter post that ABS-CBN and Tarog have the final say.
