From ‘Harry Potter’ to executive producer: Daniel Radcliffe recalls journey
MANILA, Philippines — From handling the titular role in the blockbuster “Harry Potter” film franchise, Daniel Radcliffe now not only acts, but also serves as executive producer in the new romantic comedy, “Miracle Workers.”
In a recent exclusive phone interview with Philstar.com, Daniel shared how it is to be an executive producer alongside co-star Steve Buscemi in the series.
“I was very lucky in this job to be involved very early in the process,” Daniel enthused.
As an executive producer, he also enjoys contributing to the series in terms of casting and story development.
Although he enjoyed being an executive producer, he said he sees himself more as an actor.
“I would say that my first love is gonna be acting and that’s the thing that I’ll be concentrating on for my career, for the rest of it.”
For him, acting on film is the same as it is for a TV series.
“Film and TV to me sort of basically be the same in terms of how you function and how you do your work on set. There are some differences in theater, in that there’s no editor to save you when you get wrong and you’re sort of doing it tonight, so you’re not getting a retake or anything… You don’t get the adrenaline rush in film as you do onstage. You feel like you’re inclined to do wrong and you feel like you’re walking on tightrope the whole time.”
“Miracle Workers” is created by “Man Seeking Woman” creator Simon Rich. Radcliffe plays Craig, a low-level angel responsible for handling all of humanity's prayers. Buscemi plays Craig's boss, God, who has pretty much checked out to focus on petty hobbies. To prevent Earth's destruction, Craig and fellow angel Eliza (Geraldine Viswanathan) must answer a seemingly impossible prayer: help two humans, Laura and Sam (played by Sasha Compere and Jon Bass), fall in love.
Daniel described “Miracle Workers” as probably the funniest project he has ever done and perhaps the funniest thing people would have seen him do.
“I think there’s a real sweetness to it as well as a dark comedy feel. It really had that dark, comedic edge to it while also being… all about love, basically,” he explained.
Apart from being the show’s executive producer, Daniel said he also enjoyed being a comedian in the series. He is so happy that this time around, there is no crying, over-speeding or being covered in blood.
Most of all, he enjoys making a fool of himself.
“It’s a lovely thing to have fun and be silly and be around with all these really, really funny people,” he remarked.
He would like to think that doing comedy is innate for him.
“I grew up watching a lot of comedy and I hope some of that has become useful in now turning into comedy as an actor.”
Nonetheless, like any other artist, Daniel hopes to prove his versatility by trying different roles. From a comedian in “Miracle Workers,” he will star in an action film to be released later this year.
